H80 DCell/Bass Perimeters

Here’s another premature post of my new project. Obviously it’s a copy of Greg’s PPS blank, just substituted Divinycell H80 for the 4# poly, and bass instead of balsa. We’re going to vacuum some soric sf on the deck, although that may be overkill as it’s a 2# EPS core (still cautious of using 3/4# core, but I’ll try that later…). I have a TON of the DCell here, we use it for building skimmers. Got caught up in the perimeter stringers for the past couple months and finally got off my arse and did a couple like this. I’m still waiting for the soric, and leaving for Spanksgiving so I’ll post more pics when I finish it later next week (hopefully). But here are some pics…

This is my favorite…

another…

I’ve been doing the “One Board Quiver” set ups, like Biolas’sss. I like the quad/thruster option. I’ve been setting my quads (remember Florida waves) at 6" and 10 1/2" so the thruster option isn’t off much from my standard 10 3/4" front fins. Works great.

The bottom… this will be the last pic until I get her finished.

Ok, here’s a totally irrelevant pic I wanna throw in for pure entertainment. This is why I’m so behind on orders right now. I started taking my sander on extended lunch breaks on the boat, and he’s “hooked”. Here’s me on a north Florida lunch break:)

brilliant

see guys

rails arent all that complicated

thats a very generous post drewtang

nice fishy btw

be careful u may never go back to normal rails

for real!

you gotta try that construction (with the soric), overlapping the deck layer with the perimeter stringers over a 0.75# core. don’t forget high density inserts for your finboxes. you’ll have a damn flexy, really solidly built board; although the actual “bottom” where it’s just glass over light eps will be prone to dings. Yup…ever so slightly fragile in the area least likely to incur abuse, but killer light and VERY high performance. I’ve built one with a balsa deck, 1.5# rails and 1# core and it goes like a bat outta hell.

Sorry we didn’t catch up while I was there, but I did see the boards at Surf-Station and y’all gotta know; he’s makin a nice line.

Keep at it Drew!

Nice reddy…quite the lunker.

Good choice of adhesive too. Not so sure about lively flex, but it should be hell break resistant. Hope you scored some today.

Cheers

actually

imo

as cool as this post is

my thoughts regarding new innovation and techniques in surfboard manufacturing

shouldnt be made freely available to asian production houses

thats why we have memberships and pms

if it was me. i delete it as is

and pm it to who ever was getting in to this style of construct.

other wise in six months even pb rails will be made in china

Hey drewtang,

I'm a fin maker from east coast aussie and we were making our fins with a soric core back in 2000 when it was new we also made a protoe board with soric inserts on the deck used 3mm soric with a 3mm recess in the foam blank in the back foot area to see if the soric would stop deck from the standard backfoot dents we all get it worked to well.We showed it to some boardmakers and they said it was great buy didn't want the extra work.It was that strong you could hit it with a hammer.

Hey, thanks for the replys, I’ve been travelling to see family all day. I’m in Oklahoma of all places. It’s wayy cooler than I anticipated actually. But you bring up a good point Silly. I just post these because I kinda feel it’s the nature of this site. I mean, I really don’t have the time to read every post on here, but it’s such a nice resource for us to use. You know, as much as I’ve dreamed of building boards like this for years, it took the generosity of other Swaylockers, in this case especially Greg’s blank post to get here. But you make a great point, and if there are others on here that feel posts like this should be deleted, I think that’s completely justified too. A bummer, but it makes sense (hopefully makes cents). But this is a different kind of competetive market, and Asian importers are a big threat to all of us. I’m going back into the t.v. room right now, but if anybody else feels the same way as Silly, just go ahead and pull the plug, no sweat off my back…

Drew

I believe it’s silly to think that China doesn’t already know about perimeter stringers and that they aren’t already trying to produce them. please keep posting these pictures Drew. it’s all the pictures on swaylocks and the pictures Drew puts up on our local Surf shop message board that gave me the bug to start shaping my own boards.

I have to agree, keep the photos coming. One of these days I may try one of those things, but I have to admit that it seems like way more work than I’m willing to do right now. Way cool though.

Keep in coming Drew. If you are cool with it who cares what what the paranoid think. American ingenuity at its best and you have the balls to show us. Can’t wait to see the final product and hear how it rides.

Your shop/equipment looks class A and its obvious you take great pride in your craft. Looking forward to seeing more!!!

Yeah, right on. I love putting these pics up, and checking Sways every morning looking for new ideas. This site rules. But about those HD inserts for the fins. I’ll have to post pics when I get back, and you’ll see 'em in the finished pics, but FCS just came out with a new system I’m super stoked on. They sent me a jig, a box full of inserts (actually H80’s that matched PERFECTLY!!) and even a new bit for my router. They def. go the extra mile. I was overheating on FCS installs even with slow, so we were actually setting 'em up on top of my a/c unit in the glassing bay, ONE AT A TIME!!! I pretty much gave up doing FCS in our new boards, I like the Futures just as well. We did like 8 months of Futures exclusively, that’s no good, you need some variety. But the new system is sick, you can even use fast hardener. I’m sure some of you have the new set up, but if not just hollar at your FCS rep and tell 'em you want to get the new deal. Easy route out with fitted pre cut H80 or hardshot inserts. I really don’t have a “favorite” system. I think that if more than 5% of surfers actually understood their equipment, then moveable systems would take off and I love LokBox, but for ALMOST every one of my guys, they have no clue. They hardly even change out fins at all. So it’s really a two horse race for me. I have some great friends that work at FCS and I’m stoked that they came out with this new system. I think the install with the H80 biscuits will work even better than the originals. Oh, plus I think the H2’s make the best quad:)

Did you glue all that up in one hit, or did you do the wood first then tack on the d-cell? Looks bitchin.

I tried getting PVC sheet foam in 1/8" to bend around the nose of a longboard and got various results and high blood pressure. I’ll get a pic of the uglieness this weekend.

its all good man

im just making a point

what with all the threads bitching about imports

why make it easy for them

What is soric? Is there a website for it?

Thanks,

Dave_D

Schroeder,

We do 'em all in one hit. I think it’s the only way to go. Gotta have some really nice clamps, I use Jorgensen cabinetmasters. We can do 2 “in a row” and maybe 4 or 6 a day, depending on when my right hand man gets to work in the morning. Definitely requires a really good helper, and plenty of clamps. I guess you could do it “Bert style” with vacuum and all, but this is wayyyy easier (to me anyway).

Silly,

I’m on the same page you are, my wife is always yelling at me to quit “showing off” on here. But I gotta. I’m a show off, we all are on here, aren’t we??

Dave,

look up lantor soric on google. I’ve been trying to get my hands on it for soooooooo long, finally getting it in early next week. any tips out there??? I’m not going to sink it like suggested, I’m just going to barely let it overlap the perimeters and vacuum it. We’ll see, there’s going to be some experimentation fo sho… I’m going to use the SF, it’s 2mm. We’ll see…
