hi guys !
I have this pair of keels I made a while ago that feel too thick , too heavy , and , yes…badly foiled , as well !
here are some photos …
My questions …
I was thinking of making them into double foiled ones , to reduce the weight and thickness . [The other option may be to somehow evenly thin the inside of the keels to even with the tabs]
but I was wondering if I did that , would the tab’s strength be too compromised , perhaps ?
also , any thoughts / hints on getting an equal foil on both sides ? They would be much appreciated , as usual …
cheers ,
ben
…and , here are a couple of shots of the butcher job I did of ‘foiling’ the outside of the panel . [I have not "fine tuned " it yet , till I decide whether to foil the inside of the keels as well , or thin down the inside [while leaving it flat , to be level with how the tabs are at present]
cheers ,
ben
Hey Chips,
Here’ what I’d do, "Double foil the leading edge leaving about 65% of the the thickness on the overcambered side. So you only foil the flat side back about 1.5 centimeters.
Foil the trailing edge of the overcambered side back further along the base to get the vertical cord to run at about 25% off the leading edge of the fin. To do this lay a metric ruler along the base of the fin and mark the vertical cord on the base cord. Then move the ruler up parallel to the base of the fin about a centimeter at a time and make your 25% mark, then connect the dots. Foil the vertical cord off this line. Be sure to get rid of all the flat spots with a sanding block and course paper. Then finish it out. With three FCS plugs you shouldn’t have any problem with structural integrity. There isn’t that much torque on the trailing tab but it will help stablize the other two considerably.

thanks a lot , Rich .
I’ll see what I can do .
Would you have a photo or two [or a drawing , perhaps?] illustrating what you just wrote please ? [A shot of the foil from the base of the fin looking up , and a side on shot would clarify it for me a bit more] . I tend to understand things a bit clearer when I can see them …

Well hi there,
Old mate looked at the photo's and I think it's time to
put them up on the wall, as part of the journey, learning as we go.
The foil will not be achieved as when you attack the flat side it will rejuice the size of the keel’s even if you get them close to being the
same at max you would only get an eighty/twenty foil like I did for
Alan byrne/ burning spears, also smaller keel’s will be hard to control only one guy can surf tiny keel’s and that Rasta but he could surf on a garbage lid.
Start again using the standard mal 32 sheet layup which will give you 6mm tages for triple plug F.C.S… To get clean tag/fin marriage
use a fine triangle shaped file on front and rear tages middle should blend with foil. Foil the keels 50/50 down the middle like the ones
I did 4 classic waterman, To keep them thin and lite start to roll your foil on both sides behind the first tag keeping the leading edge full
to send the water down both sides of the fin but taking a lot of glass
away from front to rear to get the weight down trailing edge to 2mm.
More resin in the glass looks a bit dry in photo’s.
Best Regards Rod
