Hand Pinstriping

I’ve been searching through the archives and only was able to find info on the use of Tape and with Pens, but I’m curious about doing hand pinstriping such as:

WHat type of paint would one use for this? Would it just be acrylic or would it be resin? I would imagine resin would just about ruin the nice striping brushes after a few uses.

Thanks for the help as always…

I can’t imagine doing those with resin, it sets up while you’re working and that’s that, mix another batch. Must have been acrylic on a sanded hotcoat, perhaps with a spray gloss.

Doesn’t matter to me though, my hand is nowhere near steady enough to do this sort of thing. It’s also, somehow, not “true” to “surfing” in that it’s too decorative, not “core” enough, more of a wallhanger thing. But to each his own.

I’ll note that shop boards have to first look good, in order to get off the rack into a customer’s hands. This may drive some of the decorative stuff onto boards where it might not otherwise belong. Remember the old Bob White ads? “Money spent on color is money shot to hell” or something like that, to the effect that all the cool colors and designs don’t make the board work better, just gets 'em off the rack and out the door.

Yeah, i hear what youa re saying, that visuals don’t make things better in terms of performance, however, if you are spending the money, might as well make it worth it both performance and visualy speaking.

The other thing is that I will end up doing this myself just screwing around, not in a mass situation.

Uhmmm, so all the nice resin work, pinlines, and airbrushing doesn’t belong and isn’t true to the core of surfing - that’s absurd. Artwork and surfboards have gone hand in hand as long as foam and glass came onto the scene. I like and appreciate a nice white board with just one TM logo as much a board that has some nice “paint”. It’s all great stuff - What ever makes the rider/owner/customer/or shaper happy.

Christian,

Hand pinstriping is all about a steady hand and the proper brush.
