Handplane Strap Ideas??

Just finsihed making a paulownia handplane and divided on what is the best technique/way/ materials for placing an adjustable strap to the plane. Obviously there is screwing a strap on or a countersunk hole at the bottom but just fishing for any other alternatives before I commit.

cheers

I just made 4 hand planes out of broken skateboards. I used an old bicycle innertube for straps and used stainless screws into snowboard inserts epoxied into the handplanes.

Other things I’ve seen used, especially for your adjustable scenario are leash plugs. Then you just use an adjustable velcro strap to loop through the plugs. Example of this:

Easy enough to make the straps, but you’ve got to have the depth to install the plugs properly.

When all else fails, find some inspiration on a Google Image Search:

cheers lawless i ike the innertubes idea bit of give and would be soft on the hands after a few hours of bashing, thanks for the help mate

I made some fibreglass ones recently. I cut 20mm lengths of round section nylon, then drilled and tapped them then installed them like a leash plug.  Then all you need is some webbing with some holes in it screwed down to the inserts.

ive also done the leash plug route but I think the screw down straps look a lot neater and are cheaper and simpler.

Some pool swimmer’s work out paddles use surgical tubing as the straps.
