First Day Test in Small Surf >>>> http://vimeo.com/2835423
I brought all my friends out to help cut and sand this Alaia. The more hands on it the better. Blake Brown is helping me clean up my rails here. Should be sanding most of this afternoon.
dude…that was awesome…been thinking of making one…this video seals the deal.
I noticed the swallowtail…for fun or function?
They aren’t hard. This is the first thing I’ve ever shaped and did it in an afternoon. I think the water resistant properties of paulownia help though because I only had to oil it. This is only my first one so I can’t compare, but my feeling is the fish tail is purely aesthetic.
Where did you get the wood from? I have been searching all over LA and Ventura counties trying to get my hands on some, any thoughts?
I got it from a guy in North Carolina. The wood we got was horrible though and spent weeks trying to get our money back, despite a few good planks it was a disaster. So I wouldn’t recommend that. I think there’s going to be paulowina blanks in cali really soon though…
found this: http://paulownialumberandsupply.com/
not really excited about buying wood over the internet though.
Very Cool; Your video makes me want to do this.
Been looking to add something to my workout routine.
So I began a search
After trying to track down info on handboards, hand guns, etc. Its not easy finding these!
ordered one of these
http://www.hayessurf.com quick and easy.
found this one for ??
http://www.waveblades.com/index1.html $300 yes, $300
did you check with jon wegener?
Handplanes are coming back into style. Patagoina made them some years ago and stops because of delaming, but now they are at it again and going be coming out with a super-dupper high strength verson. And yes the swallow tail will actually help in stablity and directing your body or so patagonia guys say.
Great video,
Tony
did you check with jon wegener?
That is where I first heard of Paulownia, but he is in Austrailia and they have it locally down there.
I did see a place in Georgia that you can buy a sapling and grow your own wood, but that is for when I buy my ranch up in Lompoc, ca.
Thanks for the help
Tony
Hess handplanes.
Hess handboards at $178 are a freakin’ joke.
$178 buys alot more mexican carpentry than whats in those.
Yeah,
Jon is person I was referring to when mentioning paulownia coming to Cali. A while back we made an alaia with that Paulownia wood, it blows every other wood out of the water. I’m now staying with Tom Wegener in Noosa and seeing how its really done. I think there will be Paulownia wood readily available in Cali very soon if not already… have to confirm…
Check out my new board, Tom shaped this two days ago! The wood guru himself… Stoked!!!
Also here’s a vid of me riding the alaia back in Cali that we shaped last month…
Go Cyrus! Cool shit!
that vid is sick do you like 7 ft I was thinking of a 6’6 I am 160 lbs
Wow if he gets $178 for those I am in the wrong bizz.
I take loads of scrap1/4-3/8 inch 5-ply birch to the dump every week.
Those videos are insane, you make it look easy.
I built a 7’8" alaia after watching the Bending The Plank one.
After some playing around I cut it down to 6"6" and have a nice 1’+scrap.
Any hints on handplane dims?
This is what I used to use for a handplane, cheap, ding resistant, and nice after a surf too.
That’s really cool, I thing you’ve just given me another project to add to my list, I should have some off cuts from the alaia I plan to built.
A 6’6" board is the size that tom’s holding in the shot. I’m around 140 and I really enjoyed riding the 7’0" i was riding in that ‘bend the plank’ clip. I rode the 6’6" though and it was really fun too.
Here’s my take on it. These boards offer no floatation. I know machado is riding a 5’9" of a similiar shape and doing insane things. Its all about making one and seeing how you go. I don’t feel much difference between longer boards (like 7’4"'s) and the shorter ones I’ve tried (like 6’2"'s). Basically you’ve got no floatation either way and the surface tension you get from sliding down a decent wave is more than enough to handle a person of medium build. The key is paddling and pop up fitness.
handplane dims- I don’t have any dims on any of those boards- alaia or handplane. I’d suggest you just look at your hand and think about what you’d like to have surrounding your hand in the water.
Today a friend took me into thisl retro surf shop in Sydney and a I scored a 60’s and 80’s handplane for $35 all up. Stoked. I rode the 80’s one today in a beach break similar to Huntingtion in the vid clip. It rode very well, some interesting design characteristics. Photos soon!
I am in South Carolina and just got my hands on a Paulownia blank that Jon left at Surf Expo. The Alaias are simply beautiful. This is my first shaping attempt and my five year old son is stoked to help. We are going completely hand planers with the occational orbital sander. I can’t wait to get into this stuff. Anyone share any quick do/donts? Aloha.
hey cyrus. good to have you here on sways mate. enjoy, n.
