I just purchased a 9’6 Hansen Cardiff 50 50. The stringer is rotted in the nose and tail about 3 inches in, original tail but super loose, water damage, discoloration etc…I got it for $100. I looked for a serial number, deck side, near the tail, nothing visible…
Just looking for opinions out there. Do I fix it up and ride it? Or get it professionally restored? Should I sell it?
No one is going to be able to tell you much of anything, just by looking at a photo of the label.
The one pic you did post leads me to believe the board is in rough shape. If it has stringer rot, that’s even worse. Given that Hansen sold a ton of 50-50s way back when, the board is the opposite of rare. Many surf shops of the era had a fleet of 50-50s as rental boards. So, I’m sorry to tell you the board is probably worth next to nothing.
Try to post more photos, here. Especially, shots of the entire board in good light, and also pics of the damage.
Send the pic's to, thrailkillsurfboards@cox.net . I'm out here in California, so can't see it in person. As to value............. it sounds like the price you paid was a little better than fair. I'll have a better idea after I see some photo's. I hope that what you are calling rot, is just staining/discoloration, of the wood. True rot could be a nightmare to deal with.
EDIT: Seeing the above photo, raises my concern about the overall condition. Does the board have a glass-on fin? Let me know.
Yikes! Lots of water damage. I'd make it water tight, and surf it. A full restoration, can be done, but can get pricey. I've seen basket cases that were brought back to life. It takes skill to do it right. And time. In the end, you'd spend more than the finished board would be worth.
Had one just like it for a number of years, but in much better condition. At least an 8.5 or 9.0 out of ten. Last time seen it was hangong in Pancho's Surf Shop in Pismo Beach Ca. The best thing about that board is it's outline. Do not get rid of it without taking a template off of it.
