Is it common to find hard and soft spots in your blanks once in awhile? Is this the nature of the trade, and should I continue shaping with what I got?
Christian - The mix is going off and forming a crust as they pour into the mold. Any overlapping during the pour results in a developing crust somewhere in the middle. Think how the ancient Hawaiians had it with stone tools and a tree!

It can be a bad pour, The foam is not poured even around the mould or the mould can leak at that rail causing the foam to be soft in some area’s. You may find it hard to get a smooth finish on that rail. GOOD LUCK Rabbit http://Southcoastfoam.com.au
