someone knocked him in response to that footage and suggested he stick with a stock 6’2" - others have said more or less the same if he intends to go for a 10th title - but I’m happy he’s tinkering around with his equipment
Nice to see someone of his stature in the surfing limelight making and riding their own boards. There must be huge pressure to keep with what works ie normal shortboard but I think his surfing is way more exiting to watch now. i know Taj won the Pipemasters last season with an air and lots of turns but I was suprised at how boring i found that so called cutting edge surfing (and I usually like it). It looked to me like he did what was necessary in the conditions. Slater on the other hand didn’t look interested in adapting to the conditions but lots of people have commented on Slaters one good wave in the final with the drop and hoiking himself back up briefly under the lip. Very exiting.
What I am suprised is how conservative the construction methods are. For example with concave decks it makes so much more sense to push the stringers to the outside rather than a centre one which ends up too thin.
I think If I was in his position I would be getting boards of every description from the shapers who spent years perfecting them but I guess his Sponsors have a say in that. Hands down the most interesting surfer to watch and listen too on the live webcasts.
