i just cut the template out for a hatchet trailer fin for my shortboards but i started to think about how i was gonna foil it and was wondering how i should transition the trailing edge where transitions into the actual hatchet part of the fin. anybody have any suggestions or better yet pictures? heres a picture of the fin so far. thanks
Makes little difference, as water flows from front to back, and different foils atop one another still don’t spin out, as long as both are close to correct.
You can step it or blend it in, don’t matter.
thanks lee
let us know how it goes eh ?
looks fun . I like the ‘caramelly’ coloured one next to it , too . Did you make that also ?
How deep is your “hatchet” ?
ben
chip i did make the caramel colored fin too. that was my first fiberglass fin. the hatchet is roughly 4 1/2 to 5 inches deep i will measure it again when im finished. i’ll keep ya updated
thanks mate !!
do you remember what colours you combined to make the caramel tint , please ?
Or, were you lucky enough to find a tint [or was it pigment] that colour ? ( I’d like to do a set that colour for my bonzer …2 runners and a matching back fin would be nice in caramel colour , with my weird coloured board bottom … )

heres pics of the fin foiled and finished. the color of the caramel fin was made with opaque red and an opaque yellow that was a bit dark. i used about 4 drops of yellow and one drop of red. the hatchet was pretty easy to foil, easier than i thought it was gonna be.
…cheers mate !
I look forward to hearing how the hatchet goes …are you using it with the caramel / butterscotch coloured side fins ?

That fin looks really, really dangerous! Have you considered rounding the tip. I doubt if it would make much difference in its performance and might save you a trip to the hospital for stitches or worse.
