Just wondering which colors work well for you when tinting with UV resin. I’ve read the archives, and it seems like my own experience conflicts with some of the stuff in there. I’ve had success with yellow and green, but blue and even orange test strips have failed miserably. Any useful tips?
I’ve haven’t had any real bad problems with colors and UV cure, but the lighter pigments are easier to work with (yellow, orange, lt blue, white) the darker colors are tricky, but thats the nice thing about UV cure you can work with it a little longer and get everything perfect. Sometimes when I do free lap glass jobs with the UV I get bleeding from the airbrushed bottom and rail job, but I think this is from suspect paint? I like to put a little white pigment in my tints it helps opaque the board and covers my glassing sins. -Jay

Howzit Resinhead, what probably causing the bleed is thinning the paint with to much water. To much water dilutes the acrylic content in the paint and it doesn’t stick to the blank like it should. Next time get some acrylic paint thinner or future to thin the paint. Since using thinner I haven’t had any problems with bleeding paint. Aloha, Kokua

Thanks Kokua, I was wondering about that? Sometimes they turn out perfecto, other times it fades just enough to drive you crazy. It’s always been a crapshoot and i didn’t want to put the blame on the artsy-fartsy airbrushers but now they must pay. And pay dearly. Thanks, Jay

Color bleeding happens when: 1)you reduce too much the paint 2)when squeegeing you lightly rub on the foam, especially when doing the lap A flat clear spray finish helps (very light, just to fix the colors in place), even using thinner instead of water based paints helps (I know, it pollutes…)

Howzit Underdog, The thinner I get from Fiberglass Hi. is water based, but I’m not sure how much of a pollutant it is. Another thing I use the thinner for is a sealer for sanded finished boards. I even did a rubout on it and the owner thought I’d glossed the board.Aloha, Kokua

Yo Kokua I thin acrylic paint with a mixture of water and clear acrylic varnish,I wonder if what you are using is basically the same thing??It acts as a binder for the pigments.Aloha. R.B.

Howzit Mr. Clean, I think they’re basically the same just marketed under different names. Using water and the thinner works better then just thinner since the paint gets really foamy with straight thinner as a cut. I have to wait a couple of hrs for the air bubbles to disipate cause foamy paint spits out of the sprayer.Aloha, Kokua
