Heavier styro foam

Hi, Seems like everybody is using 2-2.5 lbs density, but you can get them up to 4-5 lbs pr cubic foot which also have twice the compression strength and flexural strength(atleast for EPS). Anybody tried the heavier styro foam(EPS/XPS)? I was thinking of glassing them light, 4oz deck with patch, 4oz bottom. regards, Håvard

Tried 3lb ONCE, NEVER AGAIN!! Too heavy… http://www.hdxsurfboards.com

What glassing schedule di you use? regards, Håvard

in oz we use kilo per cubic meter, rough conversionm is 2.2 pounds in a kilo, currently im using 13 kilo per cubic meter …theres 35 or so cubic feet in a cubic meter …i worked out the stuff im using is about 3/4 of a pound per cubic foot i have used heavier foam up to 28 kilo per cubic meter but that still works out to just under 2 pounds per foot i thought i could shed some light on your question but the heaviest stuff ive ever used is still lighter than your average user over there… regards BERT

I guess I havn’t used any EPS foam anywhere near 2lbs pr. cubic foot either. Problem is that just about all the manufacturer only label their products with the compression strength. However, if I compare the compression strength of the foam I’ve been using to the few tables I’ve found, I guess the foam I’ve been using is in the 1-1.5 lbs range. regards, Håvard

got a question ???are you guys using eps( expanded polystyrene )if so are you buying pre made blanks???.over here i have to get my own blanks made straight from the polystyrene factory out of huge blocks 12’ long 4’ wide and 2’ thick are there crew over there who sell styro blanks ready to go??? regards BERT

I have WAY LESS tech knowledge that so many of the posters here. I enjoy reading about this stuff and learning new things (helps to sell boards too!). I’m guessing what glass set up?? 4 oz x 2 deck and 4 oz bottom, sand only, heavier than I liked. The board worked in larger surf better than my 4 1/2 lb board. The board market that HDX wants to cater to is the small wave (6-7’ face and under), performance oriented. Light weight, yet strong. We have tried the various foams and like the 2lb, XPS, and blue XPS. They work well for us. http://www.hdxsurfboards.com

Bert, we get our foam the same way you do, the cut it down. We do sell blanks. I think that Jim Phillips sells blanks too. Aren’t you in oz? The shipping would kill you!!! http://www.hdxsurfboards.com

Hi Jeff, last questions, promise(riiiiight…). How much glass do you used on the 2 lbs XPS? I noticed that XPS have twice the compression strength for the same weight compared to EPS. I’m aiming at strength rather than lightweight, mainly surfing rocky pointbreaks. Been using 2x4oz bottom, 3x4oz deck on EPS for now(it still dings easy enough, but you should see the other guys board…), wondering if I will get equal ding/break resistance with less weight with less glass over an XPS blank. regards, Håvard

2 - 4 oz deck, 1 - 4 oz bottom. Double the bottom for a longboard. For a single fin add a tail patch on the bottom. What kind of XPS foam are you getting? http://www.hdxsurfboards.com

2# EPS - Use one layer 6 or 2 layers of 4 bottom… Use 2 layers 6 or 3 layer 4 deck. 1.5# EPS - Use one 4 and one 6 oz for bottoms… Use two 4 and a 6 for the deck. 1# EPS - use two 6 bottom… three 6 deck. These are minimums. For strength, go up from there. There are numereous XPS foams that usually come buy compression strength. Here are the stats on Dow blue board. Standard blue board that you would find at hardware stores… 1.25 lb density. Real crap. I wouldn’t use this for boards although I know it does get used. Glass the hell out of it. H40… runs about 1.5 lb density. H60… runs about 1.8 lb density. H100… runs about 3 lb density H40 is fairly hard, about like a green Clark (but much lighter, green is about 3#) and should probably be laminated as such. H60 is a bit harder and could be glassed very light possibly 1 layer of 4 per side. H100 is very hard. I’ve never shaped it but I’ll bet that could be challenging. I’d put the least amount of glass I could on this one.

Thanks alot Greg and Jeff, this goes right in my archive… Jeff, I get the regular blue Dow foam (a friend got a few huge packages as a free sample) plus a few Norwegian manufacturers (Jackon, Sundolitt) make both EPS and XPS(in green and purple…) regards, Håvard

What lengths?? In blue, Im limited to 8’ x 23-24" x 5.5". http://www.hdxsurfboards.com
