Heavy board

Hey I have a great board that is being hindered by quite a bit of extra weight. It just feels a little non-responsive and heavy. It has a gloss polish and I was wondering if sanding off that extra layer of resin is an option, and how much difference it will make in the overall weight of the board. Any comments?

I would leave the board the way it is. Sanding off the gloss coat wouldnt make a substantial difference in weight and make the board weaker. The weight is probably in the amount of layers of glass, weight of the glass and the type of blank used. If it was my board, Id try to learn to use the weight to my advantage and ride it more in an old school manner. Or sell it and get a lighter board. Good luck.

sounds like a lot of extra work for nothing. sanding off a gloss coat sucks and takes forever. plus the board looks crappy afterwards. the gloss doesnt add too much weight. like the previous poster said, it wouldnt really make a difference, it would just make it weaker. just learn to ride the heavy board, they are the coolest. …if its not your cup of tea you can always sell it to me. -steve

Hindered??? Hey, invest some time in that board and learn to use that weight and its inertia as an advantage… if you persevere, there are some distinct benefits to boards with extra weight. Dont be afraid to re-discover and experience and share the ancient truths of heavy, longer boards with all those who have gone before. At the worst, itll only smooooth your style out… Dale

If your board was glossed properly there is less than 1/2 quart of gloss resin on it. What that translates to in weight is about one pound. That is going to be about 5-7% of the board’s weight. In other words it probably won’t matter if you sand it off. Like the other posts said sanding off a gloss coat is a nasty chore and you’re more prone to screw the whole thing up. And like Dale said, learn the joys of riding big, heavy boards, they definately can be a lot of fun… Matthew
