I am looking to build stands that are heavy while shaping so they are stable but i want them to be light so when i drag them into the sun and transport them from place to place it is managable. I have tried to archive Herbs stands but all i get is post saying to archive his his stands lol nothing of substance. Thanks for the help.
hmm. You could try using water as ballast, leave yourself a way to drain or siphon it out. I’ve tried using sand but found it too messy; I prefer concrete bases.
I’ve seen old tires used to hold the concrete and upright, that allows you to tip them on the side and roll them fairly easily. Maybe that would work for you…
I use the plastic five gallon buckets filled with concrete. The plastic skims pretty nice with just a little skid mark on rough concrete. You can drag them around ok. Problem is, after a few years of dragging you start to sand off the bottom and they get rocky. If you make sure you drag them from the same side every time they’ll be fine.
Well, while heavy is nice, I kinda like stable, and something doesn’t have to be both. Something I use for ding repairs: quick, cheap and portable.
Concrete blocks or other heavy objects are actually optional and I’ve found that the foam rubber stuff they use as underlayment for wall to wall carpet makes a very nice, pretty non-skid padding for the crossmembers, better than scrap carpeting. This is just the quick and dirty version ( besides being an old sketch).
I’ve made 'em fancy with glued mortise and tenon joints out of oak, kinda like the lower parts of a trestle table, though that’s overkill for something that’s gonna get dust, crud and excess resin all over it. If you find you want a longer one, use duplex-headed nails or screws to hold the fenceboard on and keep some longer fenceboards ( what we call 1x6 spruce 'round here ) around and expand 'em whenever you need to.
Hope that’s of use
doc…
Thanks Doc, I modified your design and it is just what I am looking for.
