Just posted a response to the frozen shoulder problem of Solosurfer and thought there might be a need for a thread or resource category on useful medical help related to surfing injuries . Not sure given this is essentially a board design site but see what you guys think. The best one I can share is when I dislocated my ring finger in my right hand. It just “popped out” and stuck out at right angles. I clicked it immediately back into place but of course it swelled up like a balloon. Fortunately finger not broken so Ice applied for first day…The Doc gave me the best tip…just wash up the dishes as much as you can !..the warm water relaxed the muscle tissue and the pressure of holding the dishes built the strength back. I had it taped to the other finger for support while i surfed .A simple and low cost rehab process !
Moral:
LUCKY WIFE…
Mine isn´t that lucky…
most surfing injuries benifit from RICE–rest, ice, compression and elevation. that said, a few NSAID’s and maybe a beer or two will also help.
my personal ‘favorite’ injury occured in a shower at the beach hotel in j-bay ----i put both thumbs into the waist of my wetsuit and shoved the suit down ---- and then both thumbs dislocated! there i was standing ther under the shower wetsuit around my knees and both thumbs out of their sockets!!! surf was good that day, almost worth the price…
Ahhh, broken finges, about 10 years ago I was taking my winter break on the North Shore, Back yards/Sunset point were going off all day at about 3-5 feet.
I had a 7’0" thruster that rode soooo fun, I paddled for one wave and between right hand stroke and left hand stroke, the wave jacked instantly, I grabbed for the rails and had my index finger on my left hand go over the top of the rail instead of going under to the bottom. When I tried to stand up, all of my weight from the ball of my thumb and palm were on this finger instead, it broke at the middle knuckle, same thing pointing the wrong way when I looked it over.
F-ed with it and got it pretty much back where it was supposed to be, surfed for a few more hours.
Boy that finger was the weather forecaster for a couple of years after that.
Gotta love broken fingers, Robbie Kegal broke one of his fingers last week, now I’ve got outside shaping for a while !
Hey guys! Check out this guy’s story. www.coldwatersurf.com
