HELP! How to start out in the industry

Hi Everyone

I’m a Product Design graduate living in the UK , and really want to work in surfboard design and or shaping. I surfed a bit when I was younger and have recently got back into it. I’ve tried emailing shapers in the UK for advice but had no response. I have absolutley no idea how you break into this industry but I am intent on making a career in it, even if it means sweeping floors for 5 years to start with! Although I have have no direct experience, I feel many of my skills from my degree in design techniques, material science and prototyping would be a big help.

Please can anyone point me in the right direction. How did you start out? Although I’m in the UK now, Im about to set off on a world tour in November, including South America , New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Thailand. Do you think there’s any chance of gaining any kind of work experience in any of these places (particularly Australia as Ill be there for 3 months)

PLEASE HELP!

Cheers!

Peter

Step 1:

Listen to ambrose

Step 2.

Repeat step 1

Drew

Listen to Ambrose and Drew…

Then keep shaping until surfers notice your boards performing well, THEN you are on your way.

Might take 3 boards, usually takes about 100.

No free rides around here…

Only one step.

Hi Everyone

“I’m a Product Design graduate living in the UK , and really want to work in surfboard design and or shaping”.

I’m not sure that being a Product Designer would be an asset. I would keep that part quiet.

" I surfed a bit when I was younger and have recently got back into it. I’ve tried emailing shapers in the UK for advice but had no response."

Visit the factories and talk to them.

" I have absolutley no idea how you break into this industry but I am intent on making a career in it, even if it means sweeping floors for 5 years to start with! "

Sweeping floors would be a good way to start. That way the chances of being fired for screwing up a new board are less…

"Although I have have no direct experience, I feel many of my skills from my degree in design techniques, material science and prototyping would be a big help. "

Perhaps you could briefly out line for us here just what aspects of these ‘skills’ are advantageous for the Surfboard Industry? I haven’t seen any of that sort of experience influence design yet, but I’m always ready to stand corrected…

“Please can anyone point me in the right direction. How did you start out?”

Learn the materials. Fix dings if you don’t have access to a full workshop. That sort of experience in high school back in the late '50s got me started ( and earnt me pocket money as well…)

Well I didn’t see a big industry in NZ the last time I was there, but in Sydney or the Gold Coast you may have some luck. Most factories are listed in the local phone directories. Japan or Thailand? Probably not worth trying…
