i have a friend that gained quite a bit of weight recently and he wants to get back in to surfing. dont know how much he weighs but it has to be well over 300 lbs. hes about 6’1 as well.
what he wants: a wide nose fun shape thruster thats 7 foot 3
what i have: USblanks 7’3 E fish blank 24 1/2 wide and 3.5 thick
should i just fin and glass the blank and give it to him?
He should check out the lineup in Hawaii. There are some pretty big boys out there having lot of fun, but they’re on big boards. And they’re proud of it.
I’m talking: 10ft. to 12ft. and 4 to 5 inches thick. If your 300 + friend wants a 7’ 3" thruster, he must be talking about body boarding.
Let’s not be hard on the Guy, remember that 80% of all americans are over weight or in poor health. We are a fast food national.
We need to adjust for this plague.
Make Your friend his 7’2" x 24" x 3 1/2" leave the rails full Brewer Style. You can have US Blanks take a 10’3 green and cut it to a 7’4" Take 14" off the nose and the balance off the tail then bend the rocker into it. Have them put a 3/8" stringer. Glass it with 6 + 4 Top and the bottom with 6oz cloth.
Make it a Quad Fish - They are real stable for Big Guy’s.
It would actual be cheaper too make a EPS Blank and glassit in epoxy. A PU Blank custom is around $160.00. EPS would be way less. Plus you could make the board lighter.
Here’s the board plan for a 300 pound guy. I call it the 300 pound Gorilla. I can send you the cutting file and you can cut it on a CNC.
If he surfed well before he put on the weight, I think he could ride a 7’3" if it was wide and thick enough. Is he still agile? I would have him borrow a 9 to 9’6" and then go up or down depending on how he feels.
I think I remember a contest that they used to have at salt creek where you had to surf an unglassed unshaped blank, so maybe you don’t even need to glass it.
i’m shaping something quite similar to that for him. I got the 7’4 fish blank from usblanks. he wants a thruster though. he’ll get some twinnie style fins with a full size center. funny i called him and told him the dims and he said they were too thick. ill write his preferred dims on the stringer though. he’ll like this one i think.
I’m almost as big!! I’m old, 6’1" and 260 but not so fat (38waist-50chest). My short boards are a 7’2" by 22 1/2 by 3’ thick swallow tail tri-fin. Its almost to big for me, its a bitch to duck dive. I also have 7’ by 22" by 2 3/4" quad speed dialer shape. I’t just florida surf but you should have seen it on wednesday!!
