Help! I think I screwed up. Tell me I'm wrong, please.

I ordered an 8,3E blank, (Eaton) from Clark Foam. The normal nose rocker is 5 7/16. I had them drop the nose rocker 2 inches from the center. Now the nose rocker will be 3 7/16. A shaper I talked to today (John Kies, Encinitas) told me I took too much out of it and that it would be hard to get a good riding egg out of it. He told me to call Clark and have them only take out one inch of nose rocker if I wanted a flatter board. Problem is, I ordered the blank a week ago, and it’s probably already glued up and ready to ship. John is a really good shaper. I hope he’s somewhat wrong about that. I thought 3 7/16 nose rocker would be alright for an 8,3 egg. So, did I screw up? I’m a little worried here. I spent 60 bucks on that blank. I hope it isn’t a total waste. What’s your opinion? Basic info: I am shaping an 8,3 egg, 17 inch nose, 22 wide, and 16 inch pintail.

you propbably dont want to fool around too much with the standard rocker already in the blank. best thing to do is get a blank that is as close to what you want as you can get. then you dont have to worry about altering the tail or nose rocker. just use that blank as a practice then use another as the real deal.

You can savage some of the rocker by foiling it thin in the nose. (take the foam off the bottom only). Don’t worry too much about it, though. You might find a great board in there. Lots of great inventions and creations are a result of mistakes or unexpected conditions. Doug

I mean, weren’t some of the seventies shapes and sixties shapes with very low nose rocker? After I finish shaping it and taking away some foam from the nose, it should have about four inches of nose rocker altogether. Is that enough for a decent board, considering the dimensions listed above? What I mean to ask is will it be functional, or will it pearl everytime?

Hey, don’t worry about it! 4" nose R should be OK! Figure that common longboards (9’+) have around 5" nose R, so you should be perfectly fine. Especially if you are planning on shaping a more retro/oldschool style egg.

that should be enough. if you have problems with pearling, then try diff. fins and positions. thats if you have a slide box. controlling your tail lift will help control your nose.

what kind of tail rocker are you thinking about? to balance out the flat nose maybe push the tail rocker towards the center a bit more. anyone?

The tail rocker is naturally 2.5, but I’ll plane another half inch out of it to get 2 or less thickness, making the tail rocker about 3 inches. The fin I want to use has a ton of rake (George Greenough-type fin). It will be a single fin adn will most likely be used for Cardiff Reef. Just for big sweeping turns and cutbacks, plus the occasional tube. This is not a big wave board (that’s next, but don’t tell mi esposa)[wink]

I think 3 inches is two much for a single fin…keep it around 2. As for the nose rocker, try pulling the outline in a little starting about 18 inches back from the nose. This will reduce the “catchyness” of a fuller nose.

I have several boards that are 8’0 to 8’3" in length. The outlines and rocker of these boards vary consideralbly. I think that you need to decide what kind of bottom and rail configuration you’re going to put on the board before you choose the outline of it. So tell us what kind of bottom & rails this egg will have. 8’3"x18"x22"x16"x? are pretty generous numbers. If it’s single you going to need a fairly good sized fin to manage it regardless of the foil. If the board is to be old school, will it be a hull or flat bottom with tail vee? How will you foil the rails? Where will the wide point be? What kind of conditions will you be surfing mostly? Around 2.25" tail rocker and 4.125" nose rocker will work fine. Mahalo, Rich

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You guys are great. More info: I’ll surf Cardiff Reef mostly, which is like a mushier version of Rincon, and a more sectiony version of Malibu. Maybe my descriptions aren’t so good, but it’s a noseriding wave, and I’ll ride this board from about five feet to about eight feet in the winter. The wave gets steep at low tide, and the inside move pretty fast. I’ll also use it for mush Tamarack (never hollow, but quick), and Swamis (very similar to Rincon, but not as fast down the line). The baord won’t be for big surf, just the slightly overhead stuff. Okay, the rails: I will have very soft rails up front, almost fifty fifty for the last 12-18 inches and a nose of about 17, maybe a little more or less. The rails through the mid section will be 60/40, and in the last 18 inches a hard edge for strong cutbacks, and for holding an edge in steeper sections. I would like to get barreled on this board once in a while, but it won’t be used for Blacks, etc., as I have a 7,6 pintail with a narrow tail for that purpose. I have no idea what I am going to do about rail foil and the bottom (vee). If you have ever seen Joel Tudor shortboard (especially in the video Longboard Fever, that’s how I want to surf. Very cruisy). I noticed that when Gerry Lopez surfed in the early eighties, still on single fins, he cruised really well, but when he made bottom turns on cruisy waves, he generally lost a lot of speed. I want more of a smooth arch off the bottom and the top, just a real gentle roller coaster ride. I might do cheater fives, but I am not intending to noseride seriously (I have two longboards for that). I want to ride it from the center of the board. The wide point will be about six inches in front of center. To get an idea of what I want, check out huntcustoms.com (kind creation) or the Cooperfish Comet (but with a narrower nose) or the feather fastback by Weber (but with a fuller nose). That kind of thing. Thanks again for the imput. You guys are the best.
