HELP: Is there a UV blocking additive for RR?

I’ve been having problems with RR epoxy yellowing on me on a bunch of my boards. I’ve used different gal kits on RR. I dumped a batch because I saw the hardener was brown, and Mr. Greg Loher said that it was old. But then I had a fresh batch on my most recent board and found the same results, but not as yellow. My mixture ratio’s are to the T, as I thought this was the problem. So what’s going on?

rail lap pics. yellowing on the lap.

Silmar never does that.

silmar? i’ll look into it. might need to switch.

mako,

which silmar epoxy kit do you suggest me using? in place of RR?

How old is old? Just to know how long I can keep my resin.

Silmar 249.

LOL, mako is trying to get you to switch to polyester. Silmar is derived from a casting resin, so clarity is very good. But it's not epoxy.

Are you wiping those laps with something? Seems odd its just the lap thats yellowing all over, not just on the edge like you overheated it while grinding.

What type of RR are you using?

RR 2000CE and Quik Kick have UV inhibitors mixed in. Standard 2000 resin does not as far as I know.

As I look at this I’m wondering if it’s somehow the fabric which has something going on in the fabric finish.  Usually yellowing isn’t just in the lap like this.  I was also asking about the age of the board, when was it built?

You can tell by the color of the hardener. It should be clear. The one I got was from a dealer on Oahu shipped over and it was brown. I sent Mr. Loher a pic and he said I got an old batch looking at the color of the hardener. I went and got a new batch from a local dealer and it was clear like water. He said that was a fresh gal. I tossed the old stuff. took a loss

here’s the old brown hardener.

Ordinarily I would replace that but your in HI and there’s not a way to get it there because it’s hazmat.  This stuff looks like it’s well over a year old which is shelf life for the hardener.  But you said you got the same results with newer hardener too?

Why would you toss it? You should have used it on colored boards or boards with tint.

I was soo bummed out, i tossed it outta my sight! which is in the trash!

Mr. Loehr, yea i got the same results with the fresh batch hardener also… I got the fresh hardener from Topper surf out here on Kauai. Now I used fresh hardener with the same old batch of resin. would this be the problem? or is it like you said, problem with the fabric?

Hey Bradah,

I work at Fiberglass Hawaii and we’d be more than happy to get you some Resin Research or help you out with the yellowing issue. Come on into the shop or shoot us an email with some pics and issues and we’ll get you dialed.

Glad someone caught on.  I started out working with poliester years ago then went to epoxy then went back to UV poliester.  Epoxy is OK but you have to learn to avoid its many pitfalls.  I always got good results with epoxy but its extra work and the boards always turn amber over time no matter what epoxy you use.  There are some things I really like about epoxy though.  The one characteristic of epoxy thay you can not deny is that it makes for a strong board.  Love that it doesn’t shatter the way poly does.  Ultimately I find epoxy is too much extra work and the boards don’t stay white.  I’m just a lazy surfer who likes white boards and doesn’t mind making new ones every season.  My last pail of epoxy has been being used for various projects for my boat and not on surfboards.
