Hey guys I want to start off by saying thanks to everyone who helped us along the way and anyone who shares their knowledge so freely for all of us. We have been working on opening our shop for about a year and we are now in the final stages(signing lease-Buying inventory) but we still don’t have a name yet. We had a few Ideas but cant seem to agree on anything. Here are a few of them- Barrier Island Surf Co.- 409 Surf & Skate - Boombox Surf & Skate.
Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. We have to put a name on the lease and file for our llc in the morning. thanks–kevin
Definitely Barrier Island. As far as the last word(s), if it were me I’d go with just Barrier Island Surf Co. and leave off the “Skate”. I’m not anti-skate at all, I just think it sounds better. Surf and Skate around here (inland NorCal) means almost all skate and just a few surf-related items for cred or something. People will figure out soon enough that you have skate gear. Whatever. Good luck to you! Hope you thrive.
Much better with Surf & Skate. It leaves no know doubt in anyone’s mind as to what type of shop it is. Especially once your T-Shirts & hats are printed. Besides, a real surf shop shirt should stand out from a tourist rag. Just my .02 worth.

You make a valid point that I hadn’t thought of. Location means everything, if your shop is primarily a surf shop then leave off the skate. Locals will know the difference and word will get around.
The island is pretty urban. It is unlike anywhere else I have ever been. I feel the same way NJ_surfer we worked hard on getting the best products possible and now all we have left is a name. Garagedweler I don’t believe we will be carrying any supplies but we are working very closely with Craig Chaffin from powerlite blanks. What materials did you have in mind?
I was just curious, trying to get a feel for what will be available and the type of shop it’s going to be. I wish you all the luck for the hard work you’ve put into it. The next time I’m down there I’ll check it out and maybe even buy something.
We have a very good selection of handbuilt epoxy boards being built and a wide variety of skateboards, specificalay long deck skateboards. We will have a small amount of swimsuits and sunglasses but thats it as far as apparel. Id like to meet up with some local swaylockians. Maybe we could host a barbecue or something.
i really like barrier island surf and skate, but unless you are are a really equally mixed shop with a large variety of skate stuff, long and short, I would stay with surf co.
Its a pretty even distribution. About 80 skateboards long and short, and about 60 surfboards. That is also just our first order, we should have more in the following months.
btw, there’s a surfing discussion forum at Barrier Island Graphics (google). Pretty much your -ermag.com clone, but funny sometimes. Lots of flirting its in Florida.
You WILL make more money off of clothing and accessories than you will from surfboards. If you want to really score some extra income, stock women’s apparell, wetsuits and accessories. A local surfshop owner explained this to me years ago and he was SOOOO right.
