Just having a few issues with my first board, wondering if you may be able to help.
I have cut my outline and got my rocker shaped. I’ve got the thickness in the centre to pretty much where I want it.
Problem is my profile thickness up the front of the board is really excessively thick, way too much volume. The back seems sweet.
If I take down the deck any more I’m going to loose the thickness in the centre I want.
I don’t know how to remedy this other than scooping the deck out infront of the foot area before the real curve in the nose, but I’m thinking that may look a bit weird having a dip in the deck.
Start at the tip of the nose, shaping it exactly how you want it, then work the nose deck down by planing across the blank , then sureform and then sandpaper.
Thin it as far back as you want, not necessarily all the way back to the center of the board.
Take a look at the deck and bottom rocker profile, do what LeeD said and take some off of the bottom as well. You can pretty much keep your thickness in the center but you have to foil out the nose and tail or else that thing will be a beast to turn.
My first board has too thick of a nose also…was chicken to cut. So my advise is step deck that thing or you will be sorry…unless you are looking for a smooth carver…then some thickness up there won’t kill anything. My fastest board is super thin in the nose…you have to scare yourself before you get it too thin…just don’t push too hard when you get it thin!
