help! retro fin for retro board

hey Guys, I have just started building my first board, it’s a hollow wooden, 9’6, 18 1/2 nose, 23 mid, 15 tail, 6 square tail, just wondering if anyone has any measurements/templates/ideas/suggestions for a glass on fin for this cruiser? I quite like the D-shape fins simply coz they look cool! wondering about sizes and placement though and what these both affect? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

cheers El Robbo.

D-fins look cool and are the ultimate for holding a board in and keeping it stable, however they are not such a performance fin and surfing them well is an art, they are best on old malibu designs.

For best performance and stability in the heavy board above i’d go for a fin like Sam at 10-11 1/2".

This may be a good blend of the two though,

and check out www.surfresearch.com.au

have fun!

hiya Robbo !

…here’s what a " D fin " ‘google image search’ turned up , among others…

Balsa , Lob , Jeffrey or Simpatoche …maybe you could explain this one, please ??

cheers !

thanks chipfish (i think!!!)

you never cease to amaze/confuse the shit out of me!!!

cheers El Robbo.

no vurries mite …you are very velcome …

have you seen the site Josh mentioned ?

if yougo through the catalogue , you’ll see the year , and the make and the size of the mals .

I love surfresearch …I use it a lot .

I reckon in amongst all those photos [I quite like photos ] , you’ll find a few good fins .

The good thing about that site is how it gives you all the dimensions …fins included .

good advice from Josh , in my books …check it out , and have fun .

or , do what I do , and just draw yourself up heaps of different templates [the inside of milo cereal boxes are my favourite ‘free’ cardboards for fins]. Just do plenty , till you arrive at that one that is pleasing to your eye .

if you’re near brookvale or mona vale , cruise the factories and board shops …I’m sure there would be some mal builders and riders along the peninsular…

cheers chip, yes I’m close to brookvale alright, can drive to Bennet boards in 1 minute! I live between north curl curl and deewhy on the hill overlooking nth curly. cheers for that info mate, keep an eye out for my board progress post that will come when I properly start my board and get some pics going!

cheers El Robbo

Mate , I learnt to surf at Harbord [aka “Freshwater” , of course]

good memories…

[attachment… could they have been Devo’s inspiration ??]

I’m certainly not a great surfer chip, but would you believe that the first time I ever surfed was at freshy, my older bro was pushing me onto some little white wash’s and then laughing his head off at the events that followed!

my brother was getting deeply tubed at ‘LA’ [I think you’d know where that is?] , while I was sitting shi**ing on the rocks watching …wish I’d had money for film in THOSE days !
