I’m shaping a 9’er out of a 9’1 Y and am having a little trouble getting the rocker I was hoping for. I had some numbers to go by (not adhere to, but base off of) of 4 7/8" in the nose and 3 1/8" in the tail. For the first time I decided to skim and get to thickness and foil before templating, and I think I have already put too much rocker into the tail (right now at 3 3/4", and way too little in the nose (3 5/8"). The thickness is at 3 1’8" right now and I want to keep it at 3", and the ends are starting to get thinner. I only took one pass off the deck, and many lighter off the bottom. Can I really be that off, especially in the nose!? Where do you think I went wrong, and can I save it? Thanks for any help you can offer- garcon

Thanks for any help you can offer- garcon If you are looking to get a very specific rocker here is my two cents, 1. try to order the blank with rocker adjustments close to what you are looking for. 2. before you do any thing else measure the existing rocker of the blank 3. check the thickness to see if what you want to do will work. 4. set some depth marks so you don’t over plane the thickness. As for your existing dilemma. “trust in the force Luke!!” you will have to give up somthing (thickness or Rocker) use your eye & LOOK at the shape, if I said don’t measure. I will probable get the rasberries from some of the Swaylockians, but hey, it’s my two cents. Good Luck.
Where do you think I went wrong, and can I save it? Yes but what i see you doing wrong is what alot of people do “You Over Shaped” by doing a no no many lighter off the bottom>>> That is why controling even passes… can i save it>>>>>> Sure just think where your at and how can i get back??? You can do it…>>> I’m shaping a 9’er out of a 9’1 Y and am having a little trouble getting > the rocker I was hoping for. i’d say finish up the board to a 3" thickness. whatever rocker you can squeeze, try it. when you get to a point where the board looks close, stop. if you keep overshaping it will get worse and worse off. longboards with more tail rocker are common. too much rocker in the nose will push water and make it lose the glide feeling. just remember next time to order what type of blank you will need for a certain board. good luck…,.,.,…,.,…
Everybody seems to have a different way of measuring rocker anyway. Just finish shaping, glass and take it for a spin. A fin box and a couple of fins will help you dial it in.

Right on, thanks for the input. I’m going to try to squeeze a little more rocker into the nose as I take it down to 3" and watch my foil closely. I’m confident it will still surf well. Like Rob said, I think I took too much out of the tail too fast; it is relatively thin to begin with. I will get by- garcon

I have made a number of longboards with all kinds of rocker adjutments, but one of the sweetest boards came from a 9’1"y with natural rocker. Like the answers befor me, glass it, ride it, dig it. you may find out that the nose rocker is just fine as is.some of the best nose riding boards (penterators,eg and my spoons as well) have relatively flat nose rocker with definite tail rocker.that combo seems to do well when on the nose in the pocket.

Thanks for any help you can offer- garcon That is one of the problems of begining shaping, running out of foam before a surfboard has arrived. Often blank foam distribution is such that not all can be skinned from nose to tail in full length passes. The Waker 9’3" is a prime example, it is about 3-3/4", with overly thin nose and tail. 2 passes off the bottom and the nose and tail are wafer thin. What you have to learn to do is be able to read a blank before attacking it, if it is a problem blank, you will have to mark off where you like the thickness and start a feathered cut from zero and open up to full, then back to zero. This way the thickness can be redistributed to where you would like it to be.

Thanks to you and also Scott and Matt for the advice- garcon
