Help w/ board for North Shore

I flipped out yesterday when a long time friend came by and ordered 5 boards from me. He then said he’s going to Hawaii at the end of the month and he would pay for me to tag along for two weeks in exchange for 2 of the boards. I couldn’t accept such an offer until he proceeded to call me a wimp for the next 30 minutes, saying i couldn’t handle it. I build surfboards, glass for others, do ding repair for all the local boys, and play in a metal band, so my schedule is quite flexible and I couldn’t think of how else i could afford to do this any time soon. So i’m stoked and off to the birthplace of surfing. Here’s where I need help from my fellow swaylockers:

I need to build a 6’8" (I plan on buying a used board made by one of the best Hawaiians b/c those are what will work best there, when I arrive). My experience is strongest with epoxy boards for under head-high (I am from Florida). Besides funshapes and longboards my biggest board has been a 6’4" ripstick. When you start getting into the step-up gun range what begins to change with the board. You’re moving a lot faster so I would imagine concaves would be quite different as well as the rockers and foil of the board. Right now I might try to do it the same as a 6’4" or 5" with a little extra flip in the nose and tail, with much less drastic of a single-double-vee out. I was also going to use a poly blank with epoxy lams for a combination of strength with a solid core(I feel that I would need to much glass to get EPS the right weight but I could be wrong). And I know it won’t work as well as one that I’ll get out there, but I’ve got to have at least one of my boards out there so i can learn something. Any info anybody has would be much appreciated because I know there are guys on here who know their shit.

Thank you very much

fwiw: Shape the Hawaiian board AFTER you surf there. I know your probably pumped but you can buy rent borrow just don’t steal (ha) almost anything as far as s-boards and most importantly good surfboards for good waves.

You can even get cheap chinese knock offs fresh off the boat plastered w hawaiian logos for the same amount you would pay just to travel with a couple extra boards.

Hawaii has plenty boards. Go and surf everything you can and go home enlightened.

safe waves, don’t kill yourself while your there.

Tell your bud you will hook him up after the trip, get a deposit though.

im on the left

Last years casualty

I hear Roy has a good design for a North Shore board…

What sizes were the boards your friend ordered? They’d be his ones for the trip right?

good advice.

thanks for the replies, spent the weekend at the expo in orlando and got to talk to some the greats about board design, personally i’m not bringing any boards, because i plan on being thoroughly enlightened as far as boards and waves, but my buddy insists on a 6’8" and it is my ticket there, and i did tell him it would probably be better to do what i’m doing (buy em hawaiian for hawaiian waves), so i got a 6’9" ryno blank that i’m gonna cut into tommorow, at least i’ll get to ride it in waves that will let me know really fast if something doesn’t work, haven’t yet decided what bottom to put on it, had lots of mixed reviews on that one so we’ll see…
