My pail of epoxy got rainwater in it from the leaky roof. Sheer bad luck.
The water wants to rise and settle on top, but I need to like, boil it off or something. There are smaller bubbles of water in it seemingly through to the bottom of a nearly-new 20lt pail.
Has anyone had this joy, and how did you deal with it?
Once had exactly same problem with a kilo of polyester I’d poured out and got leaked into whilst I cut cloth. I resolved by microwaving it to thin right down and allow the water to freely flow to the top then just wicked it up with paper kitchen roll off the top. Worked just ansome
Hey Rich - three cheers for bros who know what working in a dodgy shed is all about!
I put a tap in the pail, drained most of the good resin into another one, and yes, kitchen wipes to wick the puddle off the top of the rest. Strained it through and heated each small mix amount. It worked.
Glad to hear you rescued the situation…I’m desparate to get stuck into my first Aussie boards but unfortunately my leg is going to take some time to heal so it’s dreaming up shapes on the sofa for a while for me…cheers rich
glad to hear you got it sorted out Josh ! [ 20 litres would be a LOT of resin to have to sacrifce …and , that amount of epoxy must be difficult / expensive to come by , too, in a small country town in vicco , eh ?!]
maybe while your leg heals , Richie , you could read that richie lovett book , ‘the big sea’ , that I mentioned. [ It’s a good read , I reckon !] …
…and , on the other issue … Josh here might be able to advise you on tints and pigment suppliers too , eh ?
thirdshade the closest material shop too you is king foam in kirrawee. Not sure if they sell tints/ pigments, but i’d assume they would. If not surfblanks in brookvale is always good for delivery.
Hey zac many thanks. Ive already been to see graham king last week and picked up a blank resin and chemicals. Brought everything else with me in the container. However he doesn’t stock tints or pigments. Think I may have just meeting you at the wanda fish fry the day I arrived in aus As I didn’t get there till late. Where are you based? Cheers rich
Hey Greg - so can I take it that what weeny bit of water I may still have trapped in the resin is no big deal? It was very obviously visible, but I have no way to be sure it’s all utterly gone.
Lamination with the said drained and heated resin was no problem. One for the “Home Hints” anyway…
And for Rich - the FGI/Nupol outlet in my state has all the pigments. I gave you a link for the Brookvale outlet. Not far away as the bird flys, but a bitch in a car if I know Sydney at all.
I’m not sure that he sells to the public but he’s a great guy and is glad to talk about it. He only stocks the 11 litre kits which will do quite a few boards. MIght be worth the call and a drive though.
For tints there is also an FGI distributor in Nowra but that might be a bit far, other than that shapers sells tints on line I think.
Hope that helps and if you are ever down my way (Gerringong) give us a pm and we can catch up for a surf and/or beer.
Hey boys gave the sydney based fgi outfit a call yesterday but the girl I spoke to said the only epoxy the stocked wasn’t uv stabilised and the only pigment they had was white… Not really sure where to go from here.
not sure where gerringong is but a meet up for a surf and a beer sounds great when my leg is fixed.
on the way through wollongong you might be able to catch up with beerfan , and ‘matticus finch’ [thirroul] and others from here at sways …
if you go further south from gerringong [ to culburra] , maybe get in touch with ‘entity’ [daren glennan ] from here … he should know where to get tints.
he recently posted on ‘facebook’… a nice blue tint single fin that he made
okay , mate …I hope that this helps ?
cheers
ben
