Help with 50-50 rails

whats up guys just started to make my first longboard today ive shaped about 15 shortboards but this is first longboard going for something a little shorter around 8’11’’ i really want to put 50-50 rails on it but im a little scared to mess up a $100 blank any info on the rails would be great the more to better.

                                                                   Thanks Cain

I did 50/50s on my 1st board. Before I started on the rails, I took a pencil and drew a line roughly mid rail (on the then vertical templeted/skinned blank edge). This gave a good guide as to how much to take off on each side. I wanted roll/belly in the bottom so I took my rail bands well into the board while trying to keep the rail fairly full, and then pinched them as approaching the tip and tail.

Just take your time and see/feel what you are after. I worked one rail and then the other back and forth so I could keep them even (and as I figured out planner technique things stayed even).

Compared to Jim Philips (master shaper dvd) I left my rail bands looking like a series of flats and finished with a soft foam sanding pad.

good luck

if you haven’t already done so, make yourself a “Fred Tool” (thanks, JC)…it’s great for putting on clean, accurate rails…just make the same # of passes all the way around…good luck.

yeah ive got the fred tool but i thought that i could only make a tucked under edge with it ive really wanting the nice 50-50 rails that kinda pinch ohh toward the nose and tail.

try working the Fred top and bottom, and then when you’ve got a nice angle on it, switch over to a sandscreen to round it all out…it should give you a nice 50/50
