Hey everyone, been lurking around for a while checking out all of the gorgeous boards you guys build. Anyway the wife has given me the green light to have a new board built for a my b-day coming up here in a couple weeks. I’ve been leaning towards a Speed-Dialer Quad clone with the length being right around 6’6. I’ve searched around but haven’t been able to come up with any of the other dimensions for this board other than the length. Anyone here have one or has built a copy that wouldn’t mind sending the rest of the dimensions my way?
I’m 6’2 and right around 200lbs moving down from longer boards if that helps with anything
Hey meddle - I’m a bit heavier than you (225 lbs) and normally make my own boards…but my wife made me knock down the garage to build an extension - so currently no shaping room!..So I approached a local shaper and talked about such a quad…my first instinct was to go for a 6 6 like you said …but this shaper just said…NO…No longer than 6 4!
We eventually agreed on a 6 4 x 21 1/2x 15"nose x 16" tail X 2 3/4"…I’m not sure if this is too small for me…but I’ll report back…should be getting it this weekend…
Weighing in at about 100kg’s I built a 6’6", it’s fine. It’s NOT a speed dialer though. I don’t know enough about that type of board but a “regular” fish can be built quite large.
For a board with more volume, around 17x22x16.75 is a good place to start. For a ‘racier’ quad, try 16x21x16.5 with a wing behind each fin, pulling in the swallows to about 9" pin to pin. Depends on your size, waves, etc. Don’t be afraid to tweak your planshape behind the last wing (i.e.–pull it in more).
People can get pretty spicy about fishes not being longer than x length, but I’ve seen some pretty huge ones out there. I have a 6’9" that gets passed around more than a joint at a Baja campfire. The new TSJ even features Doc Renneker testifying on behalf of his 8’0 Parmenter Maverick’s twin fin fish.
Awesome input so far thanks! I’m noting all of this and will present this to the shaper in a couple days when I meet up with him. I read that article in TSJ along with Jim Robertson’s interview about his lokbox turbo quad fin setup. Good stuff!
Must have been the way I was spelling speed dialler since I completely missed your thread! What a great read though, I like the 6’6 fish template Janklow came up with. What are the final dimensions for the board you’re building?
Thanks Nuc, sat down with the shaper this evening and decided upon a quad fish pretty close to the dimensions you’re shooting for except it will be about an inch narrower through the center and tail. I’m excited to see how it turns out! Good luck getting a blank that’ll work for you, but it sounds like once that little issue is out of the way you’re ready to rock. Can’t wait to see some pics of the shaping process!
