Help with fish size

I’m looking into a twin keel fish. I currently ride a 7ft Pat Ryan Kingfish. I have no isssues with this board, fun, fast, paddles good. I’ve been moving downward from long boards over the past year (10’,9ft, 7-6 fastback,7-6 big guy tri, 7ft kingfish). I’ve surfed on and off since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

I’m 42, 5-10 height, 205 pounds, average surfer, pretty good shape, typically surf HB cliffs and Bolsa, and get out 2-3 times a week. Although due to recent shoulder surgery, I’ wont be back in the water in may.

I’ve heard get a 6ft fish, get a 6-6 fish, maybe a 6-8 would be best. Hell, at the longer lengths its near the kingfish.

MOST IMPORTANT,l I need a fish that will get me into the waves early. My transition to my feet is not the fastest, therefore late drops are always kick. Once on my feet, I’m fine (front and backside).

Is a 6ft-6’2’,23w,17tail, 3 1/8thick realistic?. I would prefer something retro lines, although modern rails, rocker and bottom.

I have no problem with a learning curve, and expect one.

I just feel that something at 6ft,21w,2 3/4 is just to small for me, although I’m no shaper.

I’m considering going to Zippi since he is now making them in epoxy. I feel the more knowledge I have regarding a fish when ordering, the better.

Suggestions please

THanks, in advance

Fish be good!

The best thing to do is to try out fishes of different sizes to find one that works for you. Everyone has different tastes and preferences that also changes over time. This is why we make a range of retro fish-style surfboards from 5’8" to 7’4". Our first four models will be a 5’8" quad fin, 6’2" quad fin, 6’10" dual fin, and 7’4" dual fin. We’ll have boards available for sale and demo (at Malibu Surf Shack) at the end of April. Right now, we have samples that you can try out if you want to meet us at one of the local breaks where we surf (anywhere between Sunset/Will Roger’s and Ventura Countyline). Below is a picture of our 6’2". If you’re interested, send an email to sales@9fishsurf.com or go to www.9fishsurf.com.

I’m 6’2" and 225. Ride a 6’x22.5"x2.75". Floats me just fine. If you want to get in early, flatter rocker is your best bet. Keep curve in your outline for manuverability. Thickness carried to the rails, through the whole board. Becker has a really clean fish shape, just a nice outline and a good riding fish. Check that out for an idea. Go from there. The more you check out, and there are plenty in this area, the better an idea you’ll have of the outline you want. But you should be fine with anything from 5’10" to 6’2".

ahh. I ride a 6’6" fish and I weigh less than you do. There are no rules. Ride what you like.

Thanks for the responses. I think after reading more comments about “should have gone shorter”, I’ll stick to near 6ft. with width, thickness recommended by my shaper.

If its just to much of a struggle, look for it on swaybay.
