Help with shaping 11´3 eagle/glider

Was planing on getting a custom for getting back in the water after shoulder surgery, but shipping a 11ft+board over the Atlantic turned out to be too expensive.

Have decided to let my friend give it a go, he has been building sailboards/surfboards since the 80’s and works in the boatbuilding business. This is what were going to make the blank out of and what we are shooting for(photos).

Have been digging through the archives and searching for all available info and photos of Skip frye style eagle/gliders. Was initially thinking of trying to copy a 11,3 x 22x 3 1/4 eagle.

Here is a collection of some info I’ve found on the boards

Rails:”hard in tail. thin and soft in nose…pinched in middle.” ” rail through the tail is an almost squarish hard down rail with an edge ” ” pinched 50/50 in the nose

and full 50/50 mid”

Rocker: “on the flat side, the tail rocker especially” I have found some rocker measurements (from paul Jensen and John Mellor)but only for boards up to 10’6. Read that there was a thread posted on how to size up rocker, would this work for this type of board?

Bottom: ”Similiar to phil edwards hobie up front” ”Hull/belly up front and panel vee in the tail.” The Vee in the tail is the key for looseness"

Outline: “21 is pretty narrow for a surfboard in theat length 11-12’ that would be more like gunnish almost. a little wider would make em a lot more stable but nothing more than 24.”

Any info on rocker, rails, outline, bottom etc. would be a big help. Keep in mind this board is being built for speed and catching waves early, not turning or noseriding.

Thanks.

Sami,

unless you have already decided on an EPS blank, I just wanted to point out that there is a 11’3" Burford blank available here and it would suit this project perfectly. Of course, shipping from the Biarritz area might be a hang-up…

Hi Balsa!

When searching for info on the net, I found a thread in french with you discussing different outlines for a 12ft eagle glider. How did that project turn out?

I’m afraid we have already purchased that big block of epoxy and Matti(shaper/friend) has turned out some clean shapes in the past, if the thing doesn’t work I guess I will have to bite the bullet and get a custom shipped.

On the subject here is a great shot of Skip and his 12ft spear from Andrew Kidmans new book Ether.

Project is still on my to-do list… Trouble being I just can’t find time to make a board for myself… I hope that winter will slow down the pace somewhat and I can start mowing that big ship… I’ll keep you informed on this (as you hopefully will on yours).

Hi- Check this thread- lots of photos (including our 11’3" Skip).

Here is the 11’3" blank with the template drawn on it. That’s about all that has been done untill now…

Steiny: Thanks for the tip, I’ve seen that thread before. Bennys post with three different takes on rocker provided by jensen, lazymo and ambrose, is what we have been looking for. Correct me if I am wrong, but out of the three lazymo’s numbers seem like measurements taken from a Frye and Jensens and Ambrose their own personal take on rocker for a 12footer?

---- Rocker - Thickness (Jensen)

Ambrose here,

asked to log-on about rocker…

the lower rocker profiles ,below 4 ‘’ cut back to a board 'feel ’

less lively than the boards I choose to shape and ride .

the Skip Frye style profiles have always struck me as somewhat flatter

than I choose to prefer.

the natural 12’3’’ Velzy downing rocker as an example

at 5 3/4’nose is kinda flat and gives a fully inserted rail kinda ride

the Downing Hawaii rocker is much the same

when I have shaped these

I pull up the tail considerably

maybe 3/4’’ in the last 20’’

and reduce the thickness

after inserting considerable concave

ahead of the fin box placement,

8’‘up + 10 1/2’‘say about 20’’ round top ‘v’

making much the hot curl homage

to reduce the mechanical slide ass tendency

{present in the contemporary flat rail to rail

production shapes of the past thirty years.}

the concaves are effective in neutralizing the

sticky tracking glide inherent in the flatter boards

while directing from the rear.

this concave vee tail feature takes time to adjust ones style to

definitely a different ‘feel’ than the fin dependant

flat rail to rail shapes that only flirt with vee-concave

[less than an eighth]

the primary benefit in my judgment

of the lower rocker profiles

allows forward trim

this is a trade off for maneuvering ease.

the thinning of the tail can accommodate wider plan shapes in the tail accessing low speed maneuvering without sacrificing

high speed holding power

which means : the template is very gunny in the tail and will impede turns at low speed w/out tail relief in the form of rocker

High speed it will loosen up just fine but

other wise just a cruise cookie monster [read hard to kick out]

Balsa: Why did you not finish that board? Could you get the correct rocker out of that blank?

hey sammy , lazymodo here, i just saw your post on the 11’3" from 07 wow time flies!

those numbers were from a tandem board that had massive rocker. 7 3/4" or something . the board turned amazing for its length and width.

anyway, how did your board come out? i hope it came out like you wanted as those shapes are unbelieveable.

if you ever need i got an eagle type board shaped by rich pavel thats 12’ x22"x 3 1/2" if you need rocker ,outline, rail info for similar projects let me know.

it was actually a mistake, i took him the board with the numbers you referenced and asked him to copy the outline and thickness but flatten it out . as he usually does the order sheet was ignored and i got this skip fry looking thing. at first i didnt like it ,in fact i tried to sell it here. but ive got to say that board is amazing. the narrow width with a nice deep blended concave he put in the nose the thing nose rides, catches anything and has become one of my favorite boards . just when i thought i knew everything!

cheers, patrick

Iv got 12ft of foam arriving thursday and I have all shades of intentions of trying to hack some shade of eagle out of it, so any little info I can gleam for you would be HUGELY apprecaited:)

ill get some photos and dims tonight and post them tomorrow.

Great! I’m looking to re claim an old windsurfer to use as a tandem (with my 2 year old daughter) and a mush killer longboard for the mostly flat New England summers. Any info on that Pavel shape would be huge! Thanks, Joe.

I dont know if it’d help and I shouldn’t offer someone elses help without asking them first but there is a fellow over on the Big Island named John Bear and he posts on here I believe and also happens to hand shape some radical Skip Frye esq gliders in that size range. You may try and dig up John Bear and ask him some of your questions.

The projet was on hiatus for a while but I started a new thread once we got it rollin again, actually it should be finished next week!

More photos on the way in the mean time here’s a link to the other thread.

**Cool Project! **

** **

**It looks a long way from a Frye Eagle and probably gives credence to all of the work the veteran masters gave us in close tolerance blanks. **Surely, this gives an appreciation to what Skip has done, and is still doing 50 years later.****

****

**. It could be one of the reasons we should all pay a fee to the makers of these mold plugs.**

** **

**Regardless, nice work and have fun. **

**Hopefully you won’t further hurt your shoulder paddling this big board. What weight are you shooting for?**

Still needs a gloss coat and sanded finnish, but the Hessian is almost done! These pictures taken on a cell phone in bad light don’t do Mattis work justice, his eighth board ever.

This thing is going to be soo fast! bottom turning from one brake to the next,! for conecting big outside rollers and milking little zippers.
