Help with shortboard measurements

Hey everyone, been reading the forums for a while now and just about to start on my 2nd shape (pics from the first coming soon!).

The next board in the works is a shortboard to take to morocco with me for when the waves are good. My go to board here in the UK is a 5’6 x 20 x 2 1/4 twin fin and it’s absolutely perfect for me in our waves. My problem is that I haven’t owned many standard shortboards and the ones I have, have been second hand so I’ve never given too much thought to the dimensions.

I’m thinking of going for about 6’1 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 with a slight single to double concave and rounded pin tail does that sound about right? I’m 5’9 and 140lb.

The other thing I’m unsure of is how wide something like that would be in the nose and tail? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is the kind of thing I’m hoping to make

Hi Reckoner, welcome to Sways.

Those dims sound good. Maybe on the big side if you’re looking to go as small as possible which I’m not suggesting.

I’m 175 and CAN ride a board that size but, why? Foam is your friend. Especially in better waves.

Morroco? Long points right? Those dims will help you paddle.

As far as nose and tail dims, I suggest you download the free version of one of the shaping softwares. You can plug in #'s and move stuff around until you get something you like. Then, just plot some measurements on masonite and cut out your template. Easy.

Thanks! Maybe I’ll go down to 6’0 with the same dimms. I just don’t want to be undergunned when the waves have a bit of size and power to them.

You can’t surf if you can’t catch 'em
