Currently riding a 9’8" Silver Spoon as my noserider and am pleased, would like suggestions on a recipie for a 10’-10’2" “summer cruiser”/noserider. Breaks will be San O and Doheny…I’m 5’10" 175 and want something different enough from the Bing, but not sure if a trim machine is the way I want to take things. Any suggestions regarding dims/rockers/models etc. would be greatly appreciated!
Well… I hope I don’t get in trouble answering this
as I ride those two breaks a lot in the summer and competition for
waves can be intense at times. I ride my own boards almost exclusively
now that I’m shaping often again but I have two favorites that I used
at both those breaks for years.
#1: Stewart 10’2" Henry Ford model. (Steward doesn’t stock it any more
but the shop guys will be able to get you something close. I didn’t like the
HydroHull as much) Great turning board and great wave catcher. I sat outside
the pack at Old Man’s and could compete with guys 20yrs. younger on this board.
Rounded pin made for great cut backs. Nose rides were just ok.
#2: Infinity Rad Noserider, 10’0". Larry Cobb (Cobbo) retired and Steve is making
most of the boards again and training new guys in his techniques. This is a great
model and has a lot of interesting things going on with fins, rocker, etc. Go to the
website www.infinitysurfboard.com and check them out. The board works really well
at Doho and is quite thick so you get the outsiders easily. Noserides ok too. The
board was a little to stiff for me as I’m only 166 lbs. and couldn’t flex it the way I
could with the Stewart, but I really caught a lot of waves on the board.
Anyway, I hope this helps, if I see someone taking off outside of me on a new Stewart/
Infinity at Doho on the next good south swell, I’ll at least know why!!
thanks for the reply surfteach…is that the same Henry Ford model that is made by Hobie now?..(2+1 rounded pin, moderate rocker?) Interestingly you took me in a direction I was thinking about going, only I was consedering the Stewart Mc Phillips Noserider any experience with it? have only been on the Rad Noserider at 9’4" and remember it feeling very loose…what happens to it at 10’? promise to defer if I see you in the line-up!
have you considered stepdeck? – harbour cheater 2, perhaps.
or maybe a harbour rapier.
tim stamps is really putting out some top quality boards under the harbour label…and those models are both great in the 10’ range.
Thanks for the input soulstice…I have ridden the Rapier at 9’4" in slop (tough read) and I’ve never been on or even seen the Cheater II, although the pulled in nose and step do intrigue me…those Harbour boards are just so expensive and you nearly never see anything come up used. I did notice you made some comments on the Walden Magic in a few other posts and was curious to hear you elaborate on likes/dislikes on that shape as well as I have a friend pushing me to go that route…in fact I currently have access to either a 9’6" or 10’ Magic used…any input? The only board I’ve ridden that I would consider similar would be the Hobie Fusion 9’4"…any experience there for comparison sake? Appreciate your helping me not waste any money/time!
