I made this board for a friend a couple of months ago, really sweet handling board shaped to his specs.
However, he has been storing this board out on top of his camper van in a 10mm red bag, silver lined on the inside. We have had some quite hot days here for the UK, 24-27decgrees C with bright sunshine. The glass has bubbled up in 2 places…Nose area at start of concave and middle under logo. I have made a few boards now and this is the first time that I have ever seen this happen… Is it the heat that has caused this, humidity, dampness in the blank, air trapped inside the foam along the stringer? This is a Safari foam blank.
…
Any ideas on how best to sort this out will be greatly appreciated!
Howzit kudu, Back in 94 on an extended 4 month Baja trip I had 2 boards on top of my camper while in Cabo for a few weeks. The board in a silver bag was not affected by the intense summer heat but the board ( braand new ) in a dark bag ended up with foam shrinkage around the stringer. These were bothpoly boards, is that what your friends board is or is it a stro/epoxy board. Looks like some gassing from the heat caused the bubbles to me.Aloha,Kokua
Hi Kokua. Its PU foam, Safari foam from South Africa.
Been reading the delam fix threads and getting disolutioned with the “spreads like cancer” comments, once you have had one repaired, you will get more…
Safari Foam is probably the culprit - from my brief experience. Shaped a sweet board for myself and after a couple of months the foam started to shrink the length of the stringer top and bottom. I’m embarrased to have anyone check the board out because it looks like I didn’t know how to plane a stringer.
Had a couple of other blanks that - besides nasty air bubbles - had soft spots all over.
In the post Clark frenzy, Safari pumped out less than quality product. Don’t know what or if they’re still doing.
You may have gotten some of those early runs.
Solution? The 2 hole and syringe resin injection method - and a more reflective bag for the future on the camper.
