all this talk about THE FISH. will somebody whos an real expert in these things here in Swaylocks PLEASE tell us exactly what, if anything, an original, early 1970`s sub 6 foot Stevie Lis Fish has in common with a present day 8 or 9 foot surfboard that somebody is trying to say is a “Fish”??? To me and my friends they dont feel the same at all, ride hella different, a separate species entirely. enlighten! thanks in advance.

Length aside, I think everyone here does agree that a “fish” has very little rocker, wide nose, wide tail, parallel rails, deep swallow tail, AND NO FINS ON THE STRINGER!!! You’re right, the boards over 6 feet don’t surf like a Lis or Fryed Fish but they do have a bit of the drive reminiscent of the real thing…

Well, I’m not a sociologist, but I think that the word “fish” is used as the first stage of a discription. Think: male, white, 6’2, 220 lbs. (Fish, 8’2 long, supercharged (twinzer, etc)). It also depends on who is using it and who is hearing it. To you the word “rock” is a great descriptor. But to me it means nothing: is it greywacke, marl, gneiss, granodiorite or rhyolite? To someone in Iowa, the word “surfboard” is enough. To you, there is probably a huge difference between a Lis Fish or a Frye Fish. Thats why you stick Lis or Frye in front of the word “fish”. The 6’-9’ parallel railed, wide nose, wide tail, deep swallow, low rocker, WITH NO FINS ON THE STRINGER surfboards are very different from other similar length surfboards. They aren’t thrusters or eggs or hulls or guns. I’ll tell you what. Although I can’t speak for everyone else here, why don’t YOU give them a proper name. (I kinda like “whale” 'cause they really aren’t fish either!). I wonder what Steve or Skip think? Newbs
Well I’ve got a 6’9’ “fish” with a wide nose, low rocker, deep swallow tail and no fin on the stringer, and I call it my favorite board in 6’ and under surf!

I rode Lis and various Sunset Cliff/Newbreak local shaper Fish’s from '70-'76, they quickly evolved into all kind of hybrids after about ‘75 and we never looked back, the best of which was a pulled-in tail singlefin ‘summerfish!’. Lis was such a dick back then that most people wanted to kick his ass. The wood keel fin manufacturer named Larry Gephart was even a bigger dick, although he was probably the hottest fish ripper I’ve ever seen including Nuuhiwa who we laughed at because ‘contest surfers were pussy’s’(seventies mentality). These boards back then were most popular around 5’8"-5’10" or so and were sorta judged by their ability to do a tight roundhouse cutback, over 6’ the pumping down the line was still there but cutbacks started diminishing. Trust me, a 5’9" Isotalic resin/Volan glassed/Wood twin keelfinned fish(Classic foam) is the “Original Traditional Fish”. I don’t speak for the “Dyno” group cause as they remember San Diego and LA were not exactly friendly ether back in the day, (“go back to LA kook” was a typical friendly greeting at Newbreak and usually followed by a punch in the head…ahhh memories!!!
