Ben, the flax cloth looked like the “MR07” on your hemp info sheet (sand/light brown color). After lamming…well, it almost went transparent, so it´s hard to say if the color changed…
Darker (unbleached) cloth will show through more. The dark colored hemp boards probably use multiple layers which affect the appearance more than type of resin etc.
Thanks- that all makes sense. Obviously the flex character (and desired flex character) for surfboards and skateboards differs a lot, but the theory is the same. Might be fun to get a bucket o’epoxy, some hemp cloth and have a go at a skate…
hemp is awesome, and I’d love to see more of it everywhere–like right here right now
but the shopgirl was sweetly hyping it–it does get softer, but it doesn’t get stronger as you wash it. Washing is just wear, and wear is wear. "
okay , here , I think , is what the lady was saying …
I just read THIS , on the back of the hemp fabric sample leaflet she gave me …
…that last sentence in the second paragraph is what I think she was getting at …"it is also STRONGER when WET than when dry , so it does not WEAKEN with washing "
…interesting , eh ?!
I hope this clarifies things ? (sorry if there was any confusion ).
The “wet strength” thing … It is probably not applicable to a glassed board , as I figure the fibreglass and filler / gloss coat is preventing the hemp getting wet .
[Roy / “Tom” ? …Do you ever use hemp , with just resin [no fibreglass] over it , on any of your boards or fins ? ]
I haven’t used hemp cloth and resin, but I have used cotton (woven and knitted), polyester, polycotton, silk, rayon, and wool, and they all work well, so there’s no doubt that hemp will also. . . . the main difference with ‘other’ cloths is that they are not as crisp to sand as glass is, but that’s a minor hassle, wasily outweighed in by book by the fact that they don’t itch and come with amazing artwork. . . . I once did a couple of boards which was glassed with rayon and it had all these old paintings of King Kamehameha surfing on it . . . pretty cool and just off the summer rayon rack at the material shop. best to wash sizings out first though.
" Did you notice any differences in flex compared to the all-glass panels ? "
thanks for asking !
ummm… not yet , but maybe once it is cut out , foiled , tabbed , and ridden , I may ? We shall see.
I guess , because my last few fin panels HAVE been inlays [either cotton , or carbon fibre ], I will have to wait till this is foiled , to compare it to the very similar template resin swirl canard I did earlier …
okay , for those who asked [thanks , by the way !] …
here’s where I am up to at the moment .
As you can see from the photos … so far , there are 4 hemp fin panels done ,
and there are still five “party packs” to go …
I will wait till I have laid up and templated the whole 9 panels ,
before cutting them all out .
…and then the foiling …
As per some of your questions , a couple of the remaining panels I intend to lay up with as many as 10 layers of hemp cloth in the middle of the panel , and ten layers of six ounce fibreglass cloth either side of them . These ones I intend to double foil . [If it is thick enough , they may even end up as finbox fins …we shall see ! ]
…I think I have enough cloth and hemp material left to maybe make a decent sized 40 layer back [finbox] fin .
If tomorrow rains and is howling onshore as forecasted , I will try to get a few panels layed up .
Looking forward to hear your experiences about sanding the hemp cloth. I did a deck patch with the flax cloth (the skateboard was a test) an found it was a nightmare to sand the laps. Maybe you should think twice about the double-foiled, 10-layers-of-hemp-fins…
