hemp , again.......

Thanks Alge!

Most of the fabric I’ve seen online is 56" width, so it should be possible…

Ben,

Yeah, 300 meters is a big number. The guy down at the shop said that they have to order it wholesale at that size, and had no intention of doing so unless someone was interested in buying a whole roll. Still, it seems odd to me to be asking for that kind of business and not have any product samples.

Not sure if that pic will show up, but the description is:

Semi-Bleached Hemp Fabric Plain Weave

6.5 oz. - 59’ Wide

Made in Romania

Item #R301; 6.5 oz. Semi-Bleached Hemp Plain Weave

A lightweight beautiful, plain weave hemp with an extremely soft hand. Light and airy, perfect for fine apparel and home furnishing items.

This is what I’m leaning towards at the moment. The lighter weight stuff said that it was a very tight weave that would not stretch at all. Doesn’t sound like it’s rail friendly:

Pat

that is excellent info Alge , THANKS for that !

I will bear that in mind , if I DO go with hemp on my 6’8 blank.

Pat , what ounce is that white one , please ?

…and I think , as “faded” pointed out with his skatey photo , that the white will really not show up that much , when the resin hits it .

The yellowy 6.5oz you posted a sample shot of looks similar to what I am using in my fin panels . (Thanks for the compliment on them , by the way , Alge … The real test will be when they are cut out and foiled and surfed .)

 cheers

…I hope a few people here [me included] DO get to glass a board or two with hemp , so we can compare results …me with a polyurethane blank , and possibly epoxy resin, maybe someone else with a polyurethane blank and polyester resin , and another with eps and epoxy ??

Ben,

the white one is a 4.6 oz “summer cloth”

I have no idea what a summer cloth is.

Well, not a full board, but here´s a pic of my little “natural fiber experiment”, a 5`7"x21.25" fish (eps/epoxy) with a 3/4 deckpad made from flax cloth (its the same I have used for the skateboard, around 6 oz., plain weave). I sandwiched the flax between two layers of 6 oz. e-glass and as far as I can tell now, it seems to be pretty bullet proof !!!

…nice !

thanks for posting that .

let us know how it feels underfoot when surfing it eh mate ?

next …a HEMP inlay one , I wonder ??

 cheers faded !

Thanks Ben,

would love to try hemp if I can find it. Anybody with input concerning www.ecolution.com ? They carry cloth, but do they sell directly ?

Okay ,

finally ! [sorry for the delay in proceedings, crew !]

Today I got the chance to cut out the two G6 template hemp inlay panels .

…This stuff is TOUGH !!

I could feel the extra effort needed to cut it , and these were panels with only THREE layers of hemp inlayed ??

The darker panels , with the 10 layers of hemp in between the cloth , will be "interesting " , to say the least … I think I will cut them out last !

Hopefully , I’ll get to cut out a few more tomorrow , depending on the other tenants not being here , preferably !

Josh , if your are reading this [?] I traced out a modified version of the green bonzer3 runners that you saw and liked .

Depending on how long it takes till I get a chance to foil them , and how long the board stays there in Avoca [?] , "maybe’’ they could go with the “Auslocks” Board ?

It’s a pity that I didn’t make a slightly BIGGER hemp panel , as these side fins are nearly a thick enough panel to fit in a finbox …but alas , not enough base area for a tab , unfortunately … maybe the next panel I make ?? [I wouldn’t mind making a slightly bigger back fin version of a G6 fin . Combined with G6 sides , all made from hemp inlay , to whack in the prawn , and the “bushy” …could be good to try on bigger winter days , next year ]

…Anyway , that’s the update for now on the hemp fins’ progress…

Maybe if I get a new set of lithium batteries for my digital camera on Friday , I may have a few sets of cut out fins to post photos of here , perhaps ?

edit :

the “rough cut out” of the fin , this is a scannered image …[yes , those bumps in the trailing edge and tip WILL be removed prior to foiling …]

and , Josh …

here is a hemp “runner” , pre-cutout and foiling …what do you think of the shape , mate …wanna try it out ? [if not in the ‘Auslocks’ , then maybe in one of your fcs plugged boards ?? ]

  cheers !

Thanks Ben!

I’m just about to put my rejoined mark warren fin into ye old avoca single fin.

cheers!

josh

update !

today’s effort …

Also … a [hicksy resin swirl] back fin [thanks , mate !] …

a checkered fabric inlay GS , and two smaller template back fins …

and two carbon fibre side fins…

so…

…one more GS template checkered fabric inlay side fin , and possibly one slightly bigger than G6 hemp inlay back finbox fin to lay up ,

then the sets will be complete , and fin foiling time will begin !!

… to be continued …

cheers !

[funny how cropped photos don’t tell the WHOLE story sometimes] …if it makes you feel better shippy , I spilt the acetone today [last time …I spilled the catalyst ?!] .

Holy crap… don’t spill them at the same time… could get real ugly… Heck don’t even store them in the same room!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TATP

I have four days off work , there are some warm offshores , and diminishing swell forecast …

So, welcome to balcony foiling , just started today ! [to be continued after the weekend, hopefully]

It’s only really the front edge started , so far …

note the lines where the hemp cloth is inlaid…

Ben,

what was the maximum amount of hemp that you put into any of your fin panells? I’m just curious about whether a fin with 4 layers of hemp cloth will really be any different than a fully fiberglass fin in terms of performance. That compared to a fin that was 50% or 100% hemp vs an all fiberglass fin. Thanks for keeping us updated with the project. I look forward to seeing how everything turns out.

Pat

I did my model board with the hemp 7.5 oz. summercloth from HempTraders.com and it works nicely. I’ll let you all know how the full size turns out as I’ll be lamming it in the near future. Good stuff. And you can dye the fabric before you laminate it :open_mouth: Think about the possibilities …

DO give it a wash or at least a soak in the hottest hot water first, and dry it on the hottest hot cycle. It will shrink it some. At least that’s what I did … I’m not sure if anybody has tried lamming it straight out of the box without washing and drying.

If you want to make a summertime lineup-clearing 12’ yacht they sell some 18 oz. canvas you could put a double layer of that on each side :stuck_out_tongue: Hardwood noseblock and you’re ready for battle …

Billy

hi Pat !

“what was the maximum amount of hemp that you put into any of your fin panells?”

Well, so far , [from memory …sorry , it’s been a while !] …ten layers of hemp in the middle of a 30 layer fin panel is the most amount of hemp I have used in a fin.

And because it was so tough to cut out , I don’t know if I WOULD go as high as say 20 layers of hemp inlaid into a 30 layer [total] fin panel ??

Plus the extra resin needed to soak through all those layers too , perhaps ? …it might make for a heavier fin , I’m guessing ?

But , if I DO try it [with more hemp layers] , I will let you know …[just remind me in a few months , in case you haven’t heard beforehand , eh ?]

cheers mate !

   ben

…just did four more panels of hemp

this time , with three layers of ?6oz? hemp inlaid over two layers of 6oz fibreglass clothh , then another thirty layers of 6oz fibreglass laid on top

This way , it “should” be easier / more even to foil , hopefully …

…we shall see…

cheers

ben

…the other two hemp fin panels are ‘mini twinnies’ [they may end up cutaways]

photos at some stage [‘photobucket’ is doing 'site maintenance ’ at present ]

cheers

ben

with many thanks to ‘Wildy’ for his template [the ‘cuttlefin’ !]

with carbon fibres…

as a thruster …

c 2 x 2" side fins still to cut out and foil , stay tuned …

cheers
