Here's to you, UncleD!

11’3" SUP just laminated with one of your fine laminates for my friend Ohana.

Here is what the bottom looks like:

Aloha Balsa:

Very nice work. Red is a hard color to tint. I am glad that Hawaiian Salt made it to the shores of France. Bobby Kekoanui who originated the Hawaiian Salt label and HLSA will be proud.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful work with us.

Mahalo,

hi Bill !

what fin/s will you be putting on it ?

ben

[to quote ‘split enz’ …"I see RED , I see RED , I seee re-ed ! " [I thought you didn’t LIKE doing red boards , billy ?!]

Aloha UncleD, unfortunately the red didn’t quite turn out as I wanted, although the photo makes it look better than it actually is. But it’s not that bad, either.

Ben, I am making the fin myself. The idea is to alternate clear and dark woods and have the resin bead around it the same colour as the board. Coloured leash-loop, too.

I’ll keep you posted with the next stages. Thanks, everyone!

Laminate stage, but dry enough to be carried (or should I say “hauled”) outside for a natural light photo.

Which shows the sad truth: that “beautiful red” is actually a “not so bad” pink:

Mein got!

That is a big board! Very nice monsieur Balsa! what blank did you use? glassing?

impressive!

you gonna make paddles too?

Dave, the blank is a 11’3" from Burford (great blank, BTW) and I used every 1/8th" of it in order to keep volume and stability. Glassing is a classical 6 oz bottom, 2 X 6 oz deck. I had to overlap two layers of cloth on the stringer since it was not wide enough (32") to properly cover the rails. Here is how it went:

First, tape off along the stringer, lay the first length of cloth on one side:

Then, cut along the stringer and do the same on the other half:

“We’re gonna need a bigger shop…”

balsa,

smooth looking tint!

are you going to put a 4oz layer of clear on the bottom to seal up where the cloths overlap? Just curious.

Austin, I was thinking about a 4-5" strip of 4 oz or 6 oz along the stringer to cover the center overlap and make for better cohesion between both layers. What do you think?

i think its a good idea. we do a clear 4 oz layer on the bottom of most of our longboards anyways. free lap it short on the rail then hotcoat it. then when sandiing i sand all the way down to the 4 oz layer. minimal weight, much more strength.

Beautiful balsa!!! I love it. I’m so stoked you guys are building nice boards like these… Yup, Uncle D does inspire… He keeps me stoked too!

just a thought

tint the gloss ,deepem the red

tinting the sand coat not so good

sand throughs you know

perhaps consider leaving the overlap down the center

for strengthening, like I beam process you are questing with the added strip of ,4 oz. on top?..

pure intoxicaton
