A while back there was a resin/glass supplier from CT (I think) noted in the forum. I’ve been looking back and using the search engine but I cannot find the name. Interested in seeing what they’ve got and how far away they are from NY.
Note, though, that their ‘surfboard’ resin is laminating resin only: you’ll have to buy wax additive and their selection of cloth isn’t as broad as some other suppliers. If you’re reasonably close, you might be able to get a sweet deal on roll ends and such.
Thanks Doc. That’s just what I was looking for. Groton is a little out of the way, but it will serve me as an alternate to ordering from the left coast. I’ve been using Fiberglass supply and it just feels wierd ordering from so far. But they’ve been very good to me too… do you use them?
I know there is a supplier in NJ also - and there must be someone on LI that sells the stuff too - but I aint found them yet.
Groton is right by Fishers Isl. That place is interesting. On a good swell there is a window between Block and LI that would let it in - probably unsurfed. After the Surfer’s Journal did the article on the Mass Isle’s, Fishers has been of interest. … someday. Need a boat.
Let’s see - I have been using Destinaion Surf for polyester surfboard resins ( wholesale pricing I have as a surf shop, though the shipping is a killer) , Advance Coatings out of …uhhhhh… Westminster MA for my boat-grade resins, cabosil and 10 oz cloth, RAKA out of Florida for epoxies - got kinda underwhelmed with the System Three stuff.
There is a Long Island supplier, I’ve seen their listing someplace, and NJ for certain, though from either one surfboard-grade resins might not be available. Merton’s ( www.mertons.com ) in Longmeadow MA is another possibility.
We all need boats, man. I go on the theory that the four wheel drive brigade will mob anyplace they can get to…but the places they can’t get to tend to be pretty nice. Though there’s a ferry to Fishers Island… I suspect it’s kinda tight there.
I don’t know where you are located in NY but in South Jersey the Mohogany Company can supply you with anything you need. From quarts to barrels of resin and pieces of cloth to rolls. A little pricey though. If you want more info let me know.
If you’re on L.I. and don’t want to pay haz-mat shipping, you can pick up good quality resin and decent 4 and 6 oz. glass at Reinforced Plastics Testing in the Lindenhurst/Babylon area - 236 Route 109. Phone 631-249-5490. I’ve been using them for years. It’s a funky operation, geared mostly to the boatbuilding trade but their 249-A glassing and 250 gloss resins are great. I believe it’s Simlar but they slap their own labels on the gallon and 5 gal. containers. MEK is always included in the price. Am driving there tomorrow as I ran out and they have new drums arriving in the a.m. They’re worth a try. Pete
I’m not surprised to hear of a place in Babylon because of Bungers being around there - though I don’t know where their factory is.
I’m just off LI - on the wrong side of the sound - in Westchester. I drive out to Robert Moses and points east during the summers and will check RPT out. That’s probably a bit of a better drive for me than the CT or NJ spots.
4 blanks under the house.
What to do… my good dilemma.
Will probably go with RPT cloth and RR epoxy (to avoid the stink which the neighbors don’t appreciate) this summer. Otherwise I’ve been using Solarez for the colder weather boards I’ve made. That stuff is really the silver bullet for temp problems. If it didn’t smell so much it’d be perfect.
They’re at http://www.destinationproducts.com/ - I’ve been happy with them as a company, though some I guess haven’t. They’re pretty straight, mebbe religious, but they don’t push it. I find that a lot of the stuff other people have private labelled, board bags and leashes and such, DS actually makes it. Lots of stuff they make and sell that’s not on their website.
