Hey Roy.............

Hi, just wondering is it neccesary too glass hollow

boards made from recycled wood?

Josh

Hi Josh,

I don’t glass any boards these days unless they are extremely thin and flexy and need the glass for structural reasons.

Most timber (except balsa and maybe cork ) is hard enough that it doesn’t need cloth in the resin at all, the timber also soaks in a bit of resin, making a hard structural layer. In the days of plank on frame boats it was found that recycled timber was sometimes not as durable, but with a timber/epoxy surfboard recycled timber is sweet. I just brush the resin on in a dust free room (supposedly) and on the deck, I don’t even sand it, sort of like a ‘poured finish’.

cheers, Roy

PS Do you shape for McTavish? Have you seen the article on Joe Larkin in PLB? He does Okanuis which look similar in planshape to those old Duke boards, there’s even a clear shot of the construction.

Hey Roy,

Thanks for the reply, nah i don’t shape for Mctavish, im only 13. I do however know Ben Wallace(mctavish factory) from the chatroom worth a look on www.mctavish.com.au

Im just sorting out making my custom plans now, thanks for your help.

Happy Surfing,

Josh.
