I just got the Hitachi p20-sb ‘Pro’ planer, and on inspection, it looks like it will be difficult to measure the depth of my cuts. Looking at pictures online, it seems like the non-pro model has a dial that informs the shaper as to the depth of cut, but the pro model just has a bib black knob with no increments. Is this how it’s supposed to be? If so, how do I measure my cuts?

I usually start off at nothing or as close to that as possible , unless I am skinning the blank on full cut. There is seldom a time that the planer is going to need to be at a constant depth, when cutting rail bands or thinning the nose and tails while adding rocker, the cut starts at zero and opens up and in the case of rails goes back to zero. Don’t be limited as to what you think the tool should be doing. It is only an extension of your hands.

The Hitachi/Skil will cut at a depth of 0-1/8 of an inch they are built purposely like that so that you can make rocker adjustments while planing. Sounds like you are just starting out. try to take a few practice passes on the blank, just skin it and play with the depth be very careful, and make sure you plot your desired thickness. If you hold it at a angle it will cut easier. It will take you a few boards to get used to. If you have a little xtra cash JC makes a good video that will give you some basic idea’s on how to use your planer. I think it’s about 25 bucks. Good luck
