HIXTREME rollout

Hi Swaylockians and Lurkians

Sort of riding related, started on my latest evil project 40" long x 8 1/4" wide, flex deck kick tailed bomber…

2 layers of 3/8" plywood joined by a 5oz and epoxy laminate. wheelbase measured out and placed on 2 bricks (representing trucks). Weighted down with approx 250lbs of bricks to bend complete assembly down 1 1/2" in between the bricks and on the kick tail.

Took the bricks off after 24 hours. I was surprised how well the epoxy set as it was only 15 deg C during that period.

A word of warning, epoxy can stick a brick to plywood, I had to hammer a brick off into small pieces…oh well, live and learn…

Cutting it out tonight…More piccies as work progresses.

squaretail …yessss !!

…now we can take that sucker to the skatepark , too !!

I want to get photos of THAT !!!

ben

nice stuff! now you too Juvenilles don’t hog the skate park…

…sort of like the old mal riders at small, high tide Noosa, eh ?

A couple of questions/comments,

  1. Good on you Hicksy and Chip!

  2. Are you going to be using griptape, lately I’ve been epoxying on carpet for barefoot skating. (it works well!)

  3. What trucks, I personally like narrow trucks best.

  4. I like the length and width!

  5. Try using screws to screw the the trucks in to the board via the bottom rather than the nut and bolt regular way. (this works well on my thick skateys!)

  6. If you find the tail is too narrow for skate parks you can stubify the tail by cutting a few inches off making it a 37".

  7. HAVE FUN!!

photo makes trucks look wonky

  1. How is the moon rocket going?

hixtreme

i like it

how do stop that thing

its like a diving board or something

A cutting board skid plate on the bottom of the kicktail has always been MY favourite …

I liked the steel plate, makes good sparks!

Hi people,

The trucks are 10" wide with 66mm Cockroach wheels, Naachi Roller Bearings, bought them about 20 years ago in Sydney and they were expensive then.

Rough cut outline, starting to look good now, just need to clean up the outline and champher the bottom of the deck.

Wildy, I like sparks too but I’d hate to be on the receiving end of a sharpened piece of steel, maybe titanium…we’ll see.

More progress pictures tomorrow…

Well, it’s starting to look good now , Grant !

How wide is the kicktail at the end …does your foot fit on it ?

Will you be painting it, before glassing the deck and bottom ? [although , that wood grain DID look nice , that’s for sure !]

Grip tape ?

…looking forward to the next instalment …

 ben

…we definately have to get VIDEO footage of this one …you bombing a hill , for your next avatar photo , perhaps ? [ Or me , kickturning the beast off the wall / bank / bowl , perhaps , for MY new avatar? Currambine skatepark , on an uncrowded day , or , actually…the Kinross park ‘spillway banks’ would be the go , I reckon !]

Just a little more sanding to go, graphics, clear finish and grip tape.

Stood on it for the first time last night, then I jumped up and down on it (ala Bert), flexs just enough.

This is going to be fun, total cost so far $17AU.

shall I make a kick pad for it ?

I’d hate to wear down that tail , kickturning in the spillway …

So, are you going with any glass ? …If it’s strong enough , maybe not even epoxy , just gloss varnish / spray it !

60-80 grit black sandpaper with good strong glue on the back , clamped [ waxpaper, then bricked again , for a day or two …]

and then we are set for next week/end … "hick and chip …the video "

Funny enough , a mate John rang me just yesterday , really keen for a skate [we skated Clarkson a year or so again , when the park was being built ] . I told him about Kinross , and he’s keen as !

…will you be ‘free’ on tuesday ?

ben

…I SO want to try that board of yours at kinross banks !!!

I’m going to put a strip of glass down the bottom extending from each truck base. Dropping in to Momentum Skate at Joondalup this arvo to get a new set of bushings, grip tape and kick block.

Sand everything down, put the logo on and clear varnish the lot.

Tuesday, dunno yet, things are pretty hectic here at work…I’ll see…Sunday could be good though, remember Kate now has her new board and I’ve fixed up the old one I had so there’s 3 for a start. Got the digcam this weekend too…

Chips and Hix with little Chicks Show hahahahaha I crack me up so much…

speaking of cracks …ouch …i’m still a bit sore for skating this weekend … I’ll be hoping that by tuesday, at the very latest , the antibiotics may have sorted things out ,though.

Trucks polished up well with a rotary wire brush on a drill, considering they are 20 years old.

One layer of 5oz to strengthen under the board and protect the grungy graphics (painted with a piece of cardboard).

More happening soon…

looking good , Grant !!!

“I’M EXXXCITED !!!”

ben

Looking funky now!

Me and my son Dan were discussing a new longboard deck out of some left over tiimber and carbon fibre just last week, this has got me going now. The trucks I want for it are a bit pricey though so it’ll just be a deck for a while. Maybe we’ll get snow then I wont need trucks and wheels and shit. Cool!

Jase (MMM)

I saw it on the weekend … ( I even got to touch it !! )

I’ve gotta say …

it looks GOOD !! [ I can’t wait to have a go …

grant hicks…

TO THE HIXTREME!!!

your so gnarly dude!

looking good hicksy, got me wanting to fish out my old skatie and go for a cruise along Manly beach!

Finally finished, took it out on Sunday for my Fathers Day treat, 1 mile bomb, unreal fun!!!

Do you like the grip artwork, Joanne did that for me…isn’t she clever…

This shot gives you an ants perspective…

The deck arch acually helps it turn a little tighter.

Righto, now what can I make…I’m bored now…nothing to do…
