"hockey stick fins "

[for those who have seen the Tom Curren segment in the film " 5’5 x 19 1/4" "

…has anyone made / ridden a pair/ set of these ?

[Brad Gerlach rode some in the 1990s, too …Mark Thomson [ yes , Daniel’s dad] made / [?still?] makes them . i posted a shot of them here …once …somewhere… [?on a ‘Flextail’ thread , perhaps ??]

…i am asking , because …

cheers

…dot dot dot …

ben

Ben,

When I met Keith M at Sunset Cliffs, I recall that he was riding a thruster with those fins.

K

Hey Ben!

Dunno bout hockeysticks but I picked up one of these recently for my noserider, and I dig it!

It goes like da clappas when you noseride and feels nice and drivey in turns.

…plan B , if i don’t like the cutaway keels …

or…

[i figure three of the “hatchet” fins from futures might go okay for a thruster setup , too !]

cheers

 ben

Hi Chips, only ever seen them on long boards, over here we call em “squirl tails” a google search may yeald templates.

Ben

they seemed like a cross between george’s paddles and the longboardhouse squirrels

since he was at george’s place when he made the MP flip round nose

makes sense he would try a greenough fin template

and wasn’t that in “litmus” ?

btw

I believe the fins Keith was using was sidebite versions of Robin Mair’s(Hanalei Fin Co) Boomerangs

Boomerangs

Paddles

Squirrels

hi bernie

the plot thickens , as mark thomson is a neighbour of greenough’s…

i made some hockey-stick like / futures hatchet / wildy template option side / back quad fins recently …

cheers

ben

[hopefully , if my usual internet cafe place one day gets its act together and fixes all its computers , then ‘some time in the future’ , maybe i can get to post some shots of them , along with the other projects i’ve been working on lately …]

i think jim philips is riding a quad of his with those fins

here’s derek hynd’s back fin [notice the curved side fins too, eh ? … taken from “blue horizons” , used without permission …sorry jack !]

rasta’s cutaway canards are getting towards it , too …

[obviously , we can vary the AMOUNT of cutaway on the back edge , to arrive at a hockeystick-like template]

i figure …next …

i can combine something like 'wildy’s … ‘cuttlefin’ leading edge ,

with …a raky cutaway trailing edge ,

and …a mark thomson carbon fibre / Futures ‘hatchet’-type tip [eg: see ‘hemp, again’ thread…]

[cross-pollination fins inc.]

ben

…use with a side serving of glassy head high rights …and let it COOK !!

Chip, I see Mark Thomson alot around here riding those hockey stick fins as a thruster setup on his carbon fibre/epoxy boards. Mark rips on 'em and his board outlines are very interesting too. Unfortunately Mark or “carcass” as he is known in Lennox is very protective of his designs ( probably rightfully so) and I have a very good idea of what he would say if I asked him could I take a photo and post it on the web. Mark has been at the forefront of experimentation with different materials for at least 20 years now and it would be unreal if that knowledge became available to board junkies…

that’s Mark surfing Lennox during July this year

thanks mate , nice photo !

…the funny thing is …

‘surfer’ mag ran a photo of both his c.f. flextail , AND his cf hockey fins , in a 1993 issue entitled “what is surfing now ?”

cheers !

  ben

…see if you can get him to post at sways eh …i’d love to chat to him

What an idiot that Mark Thompson guy is! Wont give anything back to surfing. Like his designs are even going to blow the world away anyway.

come on lets compare that to George Greenough.

Designs the fin

Could have kept it to himself and made a living as a pro surfer simply because his board would have surfed circles around any others at the time but no

he makes the surfing world a better place and passes his knoledge on to everyone so they can enjoy the thrill of surfing he was.

onya Mark Thompson… your really sharing the stoke now arent ya?

has anyone seen the last months surfing mag where Rasta talks about his twin fin shortboard and calls quads a fad? WTF!!

those hocky stick fins look cool …do they flex?

yes the hockey fins flex

it was akila aipa that called quads a fad , actually , in the surfing mag article i read

cheers

ben
