Holiday Woodie

just thought i would show you guys what kept me busy over the last few days. its made from Paulonia i sourced locally. i cut the profiles with a band saw and jigsaw. screwed it together then rough shaped it. pulled it apart again then hollowed it out with the drill press and jigsaw. the photos are from glueing it up at the back of my shop while i served customers over the holiday break as all my staff had time off. will post more progress as i get time over the next few days…

i am building a bunch of other wooden boards at the moment too!

my new website will have quite regular updates…

Dave,

I was down the coast last Friday, while the beachies were still surfable. I looked out for your shop. Is it on the service station side of the Highway or the other side. I always go the old highway so have never noticed it.

The wood board looks interesting. At Christmas I showed my father who is an old boat builder some of the Swaylocks photos and he was intrigued that people were returning to wood. He basically got out of boat building when fibreglass came in in a big way.

Bob

hi mate, we are on the beach side of the highway. right next door to the BP servo. if your coming from currumbin we are on your left.

theres a map here http://www.diversesurf.com.au/aboutus/location/location.html

and a pic of the shop here http://www.diversesurf.com.au/aboutus/whatsinstore/whatsinstore.html im usually in the shop afternoons at present. but it regularly varies by customer demand. actually friday was good on the beachies directly in front of my shop!

Dave,

I know the big surfing sign & the BP. Used to be a health food shop near there years ago. A mate filled his boot up on nut meat and we went on a surf trip and he quickly learnt he didn’t like nut meat.

I checked out FR but ended up just down from ER, then went out the Alley once it got to windy.

I’ll drop in one day.

Bob

thanks Dave for letting us know about your project, will follow it with keen interest. I have seen so many good wooden boards here on Swaylocks, amazing. but I know you are good for something special. keep it up.

Some feedback for you, Dave. I was up on the Goldie in early December and called into your shop one morning. The guy who chatted with me for prob an hour was really great. I was looking at your quads/fishes/quad fishes and he was filling me in with what you were thinking design wise etc. I only intended to be there for 15 mins or so but it was a lot closer to an hour by the time I walked out. I think I was most struck by the rail line on one of your latest quad fishes where the v at the tail basically causes the rocker profile to reverse, if that’s the right way of describing it. He knew I was only looking but he stayed with me the whole time just filling me in. I was most grateful.

Awesome w-site!

Just don’t expect me to say; “nice woodie”.

Hi Dave,

The chambered wood sounds painful!

Its refreshing to see someone such as yourself, running a commercial concern, still finding time to run amok on the fringes…

Josh

cheers guys, yes the chambering took some time! but it looks great. i have showed 2 people in the raw board stage so far… yep 1 ordered there and then and the other wants 12 longboards! yikes what am i getting myself into…

i like to play josh, make all kinds of boards with all kinds of contruction methods. i have kinda pushed the commercial side a bit over the years because i wanted to have all the production facilitys and a team behind me to work with. its great having a factory full of materials, tools and purposebuilt racks to go in and play with when i have an idea or concept i want to try… i guess it helps me stay different too…

.

Dave,

Yes, your business model, signified by the very label - “Diverse”, is one I find inspiring.

Josh

thanks for the feedback, he’s a great asset to us and really digs evolving new designs with me. he is a good surfer and gets off on the performance of the Quads. particular the DK your talking about with the reverse rocker. im sure you havent seen any thing like that b4. its good to have someone like him who really listens to my design ideas and can relay them well to customers.

Hey guys, just in case you havent seen it, i finished the Paulonia Quad board.

theres a pic at
