…Last week, while surfing Cojo on my 10’4" hollow , the leash broke and my board went in and impacted a rock on the rail, mid- board…
The three layers of glass were shattered, but the underlying wood / cork was un-damaged…as in, no crushing at all…
I sanded the damaged glass away and layed on new glass / resin…
I 'll sand and polish iit out today…
To be honest I’m surprised the wood / cork fared as well as it did…
Actually, I’m not that surprised.
When I think about how cork has been used for vibration absorption material, gaskets, washers and of course corks, how it can deform quite a lot and come back many times ( unlike foam) it’s just about an ideal rail material, especially for what is a pretty stiff structure overall.
a few weeks ago after a nice surfing session i unload my board from the truck and hit a concrete wall behind me with the board’s tail. the glass got dented, but not damaged. i still have to repair the wall. hollow woodies are built to last forever. Jack
Orthough I wasn’t on my hollow 9ft6 (in construction) it was Last sunday when I scored an incredibly painful ding to my board, Story is I was surfing a break called D’bah (Duranbah) which is quite a powerful beachie, and this day the waves were smashing right on a shallow sand bank with lots of power anyway my legrope got slamed through the foam of my board buy the wave, it completly smashed through the foam in the tail, now its tempererly fixed with Solacure but Ill try and fix it once i get some resin, if worst comes to worst I will just cut the tail down and re-glass the foam on the tail, Josh.
hey! HWSB…i like it! an acronym more, but this is very useful. i always felt like an idiot writting “hollow wooden surfboard” every time i talked about my board. very redundant.
of course the are built like tanks. what other surfcraft is built using heavy tools? had to use hammer (and hit real hard!) a couple of times in mine. Jack.

Lordy, lordy, don’t go cutting and slicing. Very similar situation came up quite recently and turned out nice - see this link for how to fix yours, with pictures.
They are tough. I was out at the groins in westport for the first session, and traded with my friend for a few rides on his(7’10" Sam Egan Thruster) anyways, he bailed it straight down into the bottom and nailed a rock. Cracked the glass thru to cork for about 2 inches, but the cork is still good. It sucks to see your baby cracked. She didn’t take on any water though… I guess there is justice in all this, because next wave I took of on his board and totaslly bailed. I came up fast, and the board was right behind me. Shot straight out of the water and rebounded off the leash. The center fin caught me on top of my head, and broke off(Glass on!!) It hurt. The board still surfed, so all was alright… Now I gotta fix two of them though…
Board leaning up agaisnt the kitchen wall for a few days, was an accident waiting to happen…my wife accidentally nudged it and in slow motion with both of us shouting noooooooooooo!, it fell over and landed on the metal fins of a portable radiator, glass fractured but not damage to the cork…was treated like a king for a few days by my wife! since she felt so bad.
