I saw some ads for fins with holes in them in several different publications being marketed by different companies (I believe). I am talking about side perforations, not that ‘Turbo-Tunnel’ fin. Has anyone tried them, and if so what are your thoughts? Thanks, Magoo
Hey, magoo…I was wondering the same thing, and I’m gonna give a few of those co.'s a jingle. I have yet to try one, myself, but I can’t see as how they would be particularly functional except for the weight reduction…then again…I could be wrong. (I’m not too comfy with breaking the foil of a fin). I’m sure that a LOT of the shapers on this site have tried all sorts of modifications to fins…and I bet you’ll get your answer(s) today. I am anxious to see what they have to say, myself ! Laters, T.
A guy I knew back in the day cut out a section of the fin base on a single fin board. The hole was almost as big as a tennis ball. He said the board was looser. I saw him surf it on a 10’ day at Jalama (pretty heavy wave for me) and it looked to surf like a normal 7’4" single fin as far as I could tell caught inside and half drowned. I never saw the thing ridden in small surf, but I guess that you could get the tail to drift or slide more on a slow wave.
The hole fins are nothing new they have been around since the 70s.The idea was to reduce base area while increasing fin depth at the same time.Yes, they work, but not without some pitfalls.FIRST, they do allow the board to break easier, but at times especially in bigger surf they tend to be too drifty.SECOND, the holes were also to help reduce outboard drag/turbulence which they did in small surf ,but in larger or faster surf they caused more turbulence than a standard fin,so most everyone dumped the idea. Sloted or feathered fins were built on the same theories,as well as cut aways but the same is true with these types of fins with the exception that the feathered fins also added some flex to the fins. It’s funny to watch things keep going around.IN 1977-78 I build and displayed to Jerry Moe and Red @ the SouthShore Factory in Santa Ana what I believe to be the first Quad fin board ever on a fish body. They liked the Idea but thought of it being impractical…At the same time I also was moving up the distance on twinnies and added a small center fin ,and got s–t for it from most others.Who would guess that 4 years later that the thruster would be introduced as the standard fin set-up for years to come. 5 FINS are also not new, they have been around since the early-mid 80s. everything travels in a revolution…Things always comes back around to full circle.Herb.
Yeah Herb, it was around '78 that my friend cut the hole in his fin. I think he eventually replaced it with a new unmolested fin. Also I seem to remember that on the first thrusters I saw (Energy) the trail fin was a little bigger than the side fins. Is that how you guys remember them?

Herb, While that
s the case for most of us, we must also be aware that exceptionally gifted individuals, such as George Greenough, among others, will always arise unexpectedly and forever change the entire way we think about surfing and surfboard design. For these rare people, it
s just normal behavior to function OUTSIDE of that everyday circle. And while true that most of us experience the fabric of life traveling along in a revolving path, thats only because we
re observing and participating in life from WITHIN it… ironically, true revolutionary change and thought seldom proceed from inside the confines of that sphere. Dale

Let me put it to you this way…did you miss having a microwave oven in 1965?..NO, of course not they (for the most part) didnot exsist…But I’LL BET YOU WOULD MISS IT NOW(if you were to have it was taken away).Herb.
