I received a used F2 sailboard from a friend for Christmas.
…It’s 9-4" x 24" x 5" nose 11.5" tail 14" roundtail.Very flatdecked ,for the most part a flat rocker w/a flipped nose.Very full volume/foil from the 1/4 mark to the tip of the tail. The rails are rolled/boxed w/a mild tuck past the apex. There is however a razor edge that runs from tip to tip.Wt’s about 15lbs.and appears to be constructed simular to the Surftech/Tufflites,paint and all.(has a stringer).
…I plan on making it my fishing board due to volume in a smaller package.(the poster known as"smoking resin" should be happy)
…Then it struck me A-10 Thunderbolt “Tankbuster”.I mean I should be able to walk around on it without a wave, and snag waves about 100yrs outside,or something…anyway…
…I’m going to re-paint it with my style.
…Also rebox it…present box is finless and too far back.
…It’s in great shape no dings, just some minor filling/capping of rigging holes…
Howzit Herb, Sounds like you're gonna have some fun with it. By appliance paint if you mean the epoxy paint the stuff is probably the best paint for your application, really tough stuff. Aloha,Kokua

F2’s were all custom production out of Austria, have seams on rails, and ASA covering over the epoxy/mat. All styro core.
If your board has a wood stringer, it’s a custom copy, but not made by F2.
Worse, your new board paddles somewhat nicely, good glide, but not much better than an equal length longboard. Problem is extreme width and flat deck, making it hard for you to really dig in deep and paddle fast.
Assuming it’s got a PowerBox, one bolt thru to the deck, it’s a stock F2, but has no real stringer. They DID experiement with aluminum quasi stringers in like '85. Aluminum as in aluminum FOIL.
Worse, if it’s a copy of the Bullit, or the Bullit…don’t think it’s the needle nosed Sunset (not Sunset Slalom), it’s got really flat rocker, making pearling a real issue and stickiness on turns at surfing speeds.
Hull was designed to work at boardspeeds between 17-32mph, and really is sluggish handling below that.
…I’m not an expert on ,“if it a copy or not” ,but it does seem to be the real deal.If you look at the bottom you can see a line that runs from nose to tail, like a stringer, but un-noticed from the deck. It’s basically yellow paint and has had some changes, such as change over in sail box (small single slotted box,w/ a wider square at the top/front of it).The fin box will either be filled w/ foam and covered then re-routed for a new box…ffffurther up from the tail tip. This will help in looseness. As far as paddling you’re kidding right?..I took it out yesterday in near flat conditions and could out paddle everything, belly, knee, even monkeystand paddling…Heck, I stood on it look around for minutes at a time while in the water(I’m 5’-8" x 140lbs).I am going to reduce the forward edge to back behind the center point abit, this will help in the catchy dept. Most of the holes are small and minor.
…Any other tips?
By-the-way it’s going to be a grand fishin’ board…can’t wait for fishin’ season to really kick.Herb
I’ve got a 12 foot Lance Carson that works great. I’m goimg to put a shallow keel fin on it so it’ll glide through the kelp beads. Right now I have a 7.5" traditional fin on it which slows it way down as I paddle over the heavy stuff.
I figure if I want to surf it I can switch fins easily enough.
Got a whopper Leopard Shark this summer off it the only time I took it out. Fin boxes are a good thing.
If it’s factory yellow paint, it might be as new as '89 or so…
I’m a windsurfer, have been selling F-2 since '86, have owned over 60 boards, tried surfing a few.
Not kidding about paddle. If you try a longboard, there is not much diff in paddle ability. Sailboards paddle easily, with less effort than longboards, but that doesn’t always equate to faster paddling speeds.
Rocker just makes it tough to ride even small waves.
But I think you’d agree you are in the smaller end of the weight spectrum, so that board seems huge to you.
I’ve tried surfing on 12’4" x 25" Mistral Team Equipes, at 24 lbs. (old daze), modern 39" wide Formula boards, F-2 255 Waves, AHD Gorge 8’3"ers, my old Robin Prodanovich 7’7" x 22 swallow tail, and some boards in between.
Nothing beats surfing on a surfboard shaped surfboard, for surfing.
…Remember Lee it’s primary use will be for fishing, this will include a 5 gallon bucket of live bait in front and a bucket of gear in back. Not to mention a 5 position kayak oar, rods, even a 2lbs collapsing claw anchor…Yes it will support it all.
…I’ve ridden some odd stuff in my time. With some re-shaping and/or re-creating…stuff like,wood/plastic service trays, wood ironing boards, camping inflatable pads w/ a plywood deck, plywood, early kneeboards to… 100lbs junkers, sponges of all kinds, blanks, doors,…basically if I can get it to drop in… I can surf it…This is really no suprize to anyone that has surfed w/ me ,as I usually surf in crowded areas w/ loads of longboards…ABOUT once a week I get …“can you give us a break and let us catch some waves”.Not to pound the drums but,I can usually out paddle a kid 1/2 my age(24) on my 6’-2" while there on a 9’-6".
…The other week, a friend of Plankton asked where i’ve been lately…I told him I was taking a break,so they could get some waves…his answer ,"Thank You !"Herb
The biggest I rode yesterday was about knee high and that’s giving it some forsure, but I rode several ripples, enough to figure out what can and cannot be done, quarks and all…By-the-way Lee, your descriptions/dims are correct.
With a few changes, a new box and my devilish tude,I’ll ride it on those small crowded Sundays @ Slackies…I can already hear them crying.Herb
I’d consider paddle surfing it, since that way, you are already standing up, and won’t catch forward rails just as you drop in. You can move back quickly.
If you free that front rail during the beginning of the drop, it goes fast down the line, but roundhouse cutbacks are…awkward.
I can stand up paddle about 26" wide, but not any less. However, I’m 55, never had good balance, and barely weigh 10lbs more than you.
I’d consider attaching a pole, hooking up a sail, and using a boom to hold onto…
Few of my posts are in agreement with what is going on.
I’m more into making peeps look at the boundries of their experience, the far side if you will, rather than the middle of the road we already know concepts.
I have a friend who surf a beast of a sailboard, 4-5" thick, heavy, with boxy rails and hard tail rails in small waves all the time. It doesn’t turn well, but once he get’s it going it’s quite fast down the line. Noone ever drops in on him… On the other hand, he’s a little crazy.
