home-made polyurethane blanks.

Just met some geezer who has taken a mould from a 7’4" mini-mal thing and is producing a couple of blanks by filling the mould with PU foam, is this a good idea and will the blanks have any strength? could a stringer be added after it comes out of the mould? How easy is it to shape this type of thing? Just wondering whether it would be worth me trying this instead of another hollow wood thing next time.

Cheers

Check these guys attempting to foam their own blank, very enthusiastic to say the least…

That’s just painfull to see. Gives me the “faces of Death” affect! LOL

I think it’s a bad idea. I’ve ben making rudders for one man outriggers using 2 part p/u foam with 2 layers 6oz carbon. Even though the rudder is only 3/8" thick i am still having problems with the foam. Very unstabe stuff!

Are you kidding… Mad props to those guys. that is the pure essence!

I’ll just stick to cutting down trees rather than poisoning them then. (I’ll try to plant a few this year aswell).
