Hoping to Identify Shaper! Asym

Hi all,

I picked up this board in january at a surf shop on the 101 in leucadia/encinitas at a shop that has a sign saying something like “200 Used boards”. For $225 this seemed like a fun experiment. I forgot I even had it till I brought it out this weekend in the OBX. I passed it back and forth with a friend, and it blew our minds!!

Does anyone here know who shaped it? how to get in touch with them? it is def not a backyard shaper. When I asked the shop back in january, they thought it was from a shaper and one of the bigger brands just making him something fun for himself to try. It’s about 5’3" on the long side and about 5’0" on the short. seems to be made of epoxy with a “disappearing” stringer.

Any knowledge is greatly appreciated!!

What you have here is an example of the ‘‘Hook Tail’’, an Australian design, circa 1962.   (The design, not the board)      I saw an example of it, on the North Shore, in 1963.    It was this tail design that inspired Carl Ekstrom to explore the asymmetrical concept in late 1963, or early 1964.     He’s still at it, as you probably know.    Some of Carl’s current designs, seem to have influenced whoever shaped your board.

Good info, thanks Bill.

Whats the reasoning in placing the twin so much futher up from the tails tip , compared to the quad side ?

Aloha Greg,

In 1962 I had a lengthy discussion with Carl about the ‘‘Hook Tail’’ design, which centered on the concept of a’‘gun rail’’ frontside, and a ‘‘hot dog’’ rail backside.    It was a period of single fin only thinking.      While the concept works, it was, and is, a concept that I’ve never had any interest in.     Because of that, any comment I would make, would only be speculation.     All that said, it looks to me that the intent is to have ‘‘quad behavior’’ on one side of the board, and ‘‘almost single fin behavior’’ on the other side.     As stated above, it’s just a design and construction path,  that I never developed any interest in persuing.

Most of these " free" thinkers mimic this setup .

Fun to watch and listen to the theory .  :-)
