You know, across the stringer instead of running with it. PLease excuse my ignorance in this matter.

I think the word you are looking for is perpendicular. The reason you would not want to mount your leash loop perpendicular to the stringer is because the majority of the direction of the pull is parallel to the stringer. If you orient the foot print, fillets and fiber orientation perpendicular to the direction of the primary pull force your going to need to make the loop much bigger to handle the load.
I’ve seen (and happen to have) fishes with the perpendicular leash loop connecting the swallow tail just over the butt crack.
I think they’re ugly…

Tomatdaum’s point on loading is probably the most valid.
Anchor Loading 101 eh.

Perhaps the question may have been worded better:
Leash Loops… Why?
Back in my prime (before I discovered french fries & Vegas) the only leashes we had were the ones we kept on our women.
gotta go…
Both ends of leash loop over stringer. Strongest part of board wrt delam issues.
I was about to say they look crap that’s why ! But checking out Brandon’s his looks way cool !
Steve
kinda makes sense on a fish… just yesterday i was riding mine and i hit my knee on the loop and then jamed my big toe against it… i was thinking “next fish gets a plug”…
Thanks everyone for your responses. I like the idea of putting the loop over the buttcrack but am I compromising the structural integrity by doing this. It seems that if I made it thick enough it should be ok. Hmmmmm???

If you’ve got a decent glass schedule, you splay the foot print out in nice big radial footprint and don’t ask too much of it like surfing it in a big over head pounding beach break should be fine.
I have perpendicular leash loops on a couple of stringerless eps epoxies, and I love them. If you make them wide enough you can slip your railsaver through them and you never need string. I have surfed them pretty heavy too even broke a few leashes with them and never had a problem with strength. I like them with epoxies cause it is one less hole in your board to leak compared to having a plug.
I was over at Moonlight today and saw sweet looking Pavel Choice Quad Fish with a normal size leash plug placed in the butt crack area on the stringer. The metal bar was running perpendicular to the stinger and the plug was carefully ground/shaped to comform to the contour of the buttcrack…that was something I had never seen before. it looked both strong and stealth.
I was going to ask , "what’s the deal with ‘leash loops’ , anyway " ?
Although I have moulded [shock ! horror!] loops on the last three boards I’ve made , I still like / prefer legrope plugs for strength and being flush with the deck.
Leash “loops” …is it a “purists” / “retro” thing in America, or something ??
It just seems to me that drilling a hole and putting in a plug is quicker / cheaper ( / ?cleaner ?) than having to make a loop .
ben
Leash loop is stronger than the standard plug.
Has an artisan look to it.
And if it fails the board doesn’t take on water.
SrPato,
I have done a couple of perpendicular leash loops, and it seems to me that they would be every bit as strng as one over the stringer–just fan the ends out in all directions and blend it well with the deck, and there shouldn’t be a problem.
I like them better, especially for fish…
As for why, I like the idea of not interrupting the skin and or stringer for something that could be done on the surface, and you can make them look really nice.
Just my druthers…
