Hot Coat Applicator

So I did my first hot coat! (after sanding down my ‘de-gassing’ and ‘canyon created’ bubbles of course). I used a regular paint brush, but seemed to be wasting a lot of resin. I searched the archives for hotcoating techniques but never found what i was looking for.

Do most people dip the brush in the jar then layer it on? or pour it on and spread it (like i did and seemed to be wasteful)? what about other applicatiors, like a paint roller? or anything else that gives a proper and even coat?

senk ju.

pour in a thin line from nose to tail (and back) until the whole board is covered, immediately following the resin with your brush a few inches behind AS YOU POUR.

then, brush from rail to rail.

one final pass from nose to tail.

walk away.

It won’t do the trick

if it aint got that drip.

Howzit soulstice, Do you angle the brush a little so the brush is pushing the resin towards the rails, I find this gives you a more even hot coat since you don’t push any resin back over the area you just brushed. Really works great for gloss jobs also.Aloha,Kokua

Nj Surfer is right about the drip, you should be using quite a bit of resin.

The main purpose of the hotcoat is to give you a sacrificial layer that you sand your smooth finish out of.

Lay it on too thin, and you’ll hit the weave when you sand it back.

Resin is cheap compared to time and stress fixing sand throughs!

As you get a feel for how much resin to use, you may use less.

If using Epoxy, it likes to be layed on thickish, or you can get craters where the resin seems to run away from the cloth!

Kokua’s tip is a gem, as always.
