So I’m working on a 6’6 swallow tail. Didn’t like how the lam job turned out and had to “ding repair” some spots. Put on a hot coat and sanded and it looked horrible. So I painted over the whole thing with a spray of acrylic. Now I need to patch on logos with some glass and gloss it.
I’ve searched and searched, but couldn’t get exactly what I’m looking for. So here is my question. Can I hot coat over the paint and glass patch then gloss. Will the paint desperate under a hot coat? I know I could seal the board after logo, but I’d like a hot coat to fix some sanding spots. Thoughts?
you will have to sand that hotcoat off in the areas you want to add logos and a patch. I would imagine you won’t get a good bond to the paint either so I’d sand that away. I would forgo the logos and ride it. Pictures help.
What made the original lamination go wrong? What are your really trying to fix? because you are going down the rabbit hole here and doing things in the wrong order.
Should have hotcoated and sanded, add logo and patch, painted if necessary, final coat over that.
Sorry to say it mate but I’m in agreement with pico. Re-sand the board getting rid of the paint it will kill your bond. Deal with the patch repairs, if you have a clean area for your logo lay it up with 2 4oz patches, top one slightly smaller so it will feather in when sanding. Hot coat over your logo patch and sand then mask off your logo and repaint with your acrylic. Could still turn out sweet. All part of the very steep learning curve. Good luck and post some pics and give us a ride report.
Cheers

Laps got screwed up on lam. And had some sand throughs on hot coat. Painted it before logo to get it the logo over the color.
I guess really it comes down to can I hot coat over paint? Or do I need to spray a laquer over it, rough up, the coat. I think instead of trying to sand down for patch, I’m gonna patch, tape patch, hot coat, blend with light sanding, then gloss.
I’ve painted over acryllic, but the design was pretty much all skinny lines and not like a huge area of paint. So It didn’t cause me any issues. I’d be somewhat apprehensive if the whole board was painted solid, then hotcoated, cause then I’d assume the hotcoat is only bonded to the board as well as your paint is.
