Hot coat sprays and tape edges

Ok gurus…when I paint ontop of glass over a finished sanded board I can feel the edge of the paint on the surface of the glass. If I try to flat off the edge I also flat off the finish of the spray. Am I laying it down too thickly? If so how do I achieve a dense colour without ending up with edge? Should I be feathering edges with wet and dry and then shoot a clear coat?

In your hands boys for constructive feedback.

cheers

You are building up that edge.

The more paint, the higher the edge.

If you use good quality paint, it can be sanded.

Use a Scotch-brite pad and sand lightly.

Run it over the painted edge to soften it up.

I pinline under Acrylic all the time.

If done properly, it can’t be felt.

Bingo! Many thanks Barry scotch bright pad makes perfect sense…just switched to a new paint as I’ve only just moved from uk to aus…I’m using an auto acrylic with thinners…guess it must be reasonable quality as it’s for industry and apparently he supplies all the local surfboard factories. Thanks for the tip. Cheers rich

I’m no guru but here are my thoughts:

Better paint so you don’t have to lay down as much material.

Better tape???  So your paint doesn’t pile up against it.  Try 3m Fine Line Tape.

Clear coat when done.

I’m doing a EPS epoxy board right now, I use the Liquitex heavy medium paint. 4 oz tube is about $9.00. apply with a small art brush. I go around twice on the board. pull tape, lightly sand pin line when dry.

Now I shoot the board with a high soilds VOC2.1, 4 to 1 mix, 2 part clear top coat…lots of brands out there.  Stuff kicks in about 15 mins. I lightly sand the first coat and knock down any pinline edge.   Then I tack cloth for flying rodents and buggers, and shoot with nice shiney top coat.

As stated by Barry;   Scotchbrite 3–M pad.  Purple, grey or White.  The more worn out the better.  Two coats of any color should be enough.  After using a 3–M you can top coat with whatever.

Thank you boys fantastic and instant advice as usual…much appreciated. Cheers rich
